Good question Jono. Without some sort of covered cabin for passengers, I don't see how the boat can be 60nm coded.

It does make me wonder though - people have crossed the Atlantic in an open Ocean Dynamics RIB but you can't use it 60 miles offshore!!!

With the major improvements in foulies these days maybe they should look at things again. After all most yachtsmen steer from outside!!!

Probably a Cat.3 with a restriction to 3 miles from land at night. Some of the open boats up here get that.
cheers

Jono

Good to see you the other day.

We are about to CAT 2 a twin diesel cabin RHIB for the 60 mile limit. We have negotiated with CA that the toilet, accomodation & toilet may be exempted provided that voyage is limited to 24 hours. In most cases this will be acceptable for application.

Cabin must be a permanent and purpose built structure ( in our case aluminium full length cabin). Prior to harmonised codes a means of protection for PAX was accepatble ie. canvas/fold down cover etc. I guess these guys had gone for a CAT 3 but with condition of daylight only, portable cover etc. The vessel now has "grandfather" rights.

There are other means of exemtion eg. if open RHIB is operating with a mother ship etc.

Of more interest though is the manning requirments for this boat. If they have gone for a 24 hour application/60 miles then coding for 12&2 could cause working time difficulties if they stay out the full 24. To ensure compliance they could have gone 12&3. From memory I think that on the CAt 2 they also require a competent engineer on board but that can be a dual role person.

Cheers

John
