MCA busy at Cowes week

We were one of many RIBs inspected today by MCA for coded /uncoded RIBS at Cowes, they said they had not found any boats operating illegally yet. Very friendly/thorough approach and no complaints from me.

no probs with that but I wish the fine for non compliance would be more than the cost of complying unfortunately it's considerably less

We had them board the 68' Yacht I'm on this week - he was pretty thorough and checked all 24 lifejackets, all the heat/smoke heads, First Aid Kit inventory, operation of VHF etc - almost like a full coding check!

We sailed through () but it did take him aboat an hour to cover everything.

Real shame they dont visit some of the other sailing events. Its Ramsgate Week here and over the last three years I have seen a number of boats operating without the correct kit, code etc. They only ever seem to cover Cowes.

They carried on all week looking for yachts and Ribs uncoded, they grounded two yachts and I believe a tall ship for not meeting standards. But as Cowes week was not as busy as usual I was boarded twice and they came back for three!! Somewhere along the line their records did not show the first inspection on a log despite me having a copy. Still no complaints.

Also just heard tonight of a powerboater killed in an accident between two boats at a festival on the south coast I think, not sure where but maybe Brighton?
Just found out the location:-A man died following a serious crash between two boats during powerboat racing at Dover Regatta, police said today.
The crash happened in front of crowds at Dover Harbour at approximately midday.
A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "At 12.40pm Kent Police was notified of a collision between two powerboats taking part in an organised race during Dover Regatta.

I thought I would raise this again. It appeared last year the MCA were not very active, but this year they are out with police boats, checking water taxis, RIBs and any other vessels

They state on twitter "Also checked 14 RIB's and in 90% of cases the helm was not wearing the 'kill cord' or the passengers wearing lifejackets....." and if my views are anything to go by it was appalling yesterday with safety clearly at the bottom of loads of families and boat users.

Good to see them active again, maybe they will stop a few of the unlicensed craft/skippers

Was Steves Boat - me driving ...just a broken RIB in Studland in a unpleasant place swell by Old Harry . - just after the sinking dinghy next to chain ferry . After Poole ILB sorted a RIB in the morning, the Ski accident and 2 missing swimmers . The ILB was out again later that night too !!!

Not sure how they kept it topped up with petrol it was out so much ! I think 7 differing calls for the ILB from mid morning to very early on Sunday morning

Thanks Peter

Nice to receive a polite answer as opposed to just " Oi " ...

I could only hear Portland CG as the distance from Poole to me at the refinery was just too much for the ILB and your VHF set. Mind you i would of stood a better chance of making out your replies if there wasnt so many tw@'s calling up Solent CG with routine traffic calls all afternoon....especially frustrating when they were working multiple casualties.

Im sure they appreciated your efforts though...

Simon

Interesting updates that some of the boat users they stopped in an effort to reduce injury and even deaths- were abusive - seems that advice does not work then , so is a more rigid approach needed?

Yep.

The above is an example of why education over regulation will never work.
