RYA membership
Any one know whether you can retain RYA qualifications for crew member qualifications without being an RYA MEMBER.?

Maybe I have read your question wrong as I would think that once you have gained an RYA qualification it's retention wouldn't be on condition that you stay a Member.
Which Crew Member quali are we considering here C2?

As far as I am concerned you only need to be an RYA Member if you are an Instructor - nothing else.
To get a definitive answer it would be best to contact RYA Training direct

When I checked with them last year the requirement was that trainers/examiners/inspectors needed continuing membership to carry out duties at that level. Instructors had to be members at time of renewal. But always best and easy enough to ring HQ and get current chapter and verse if in any doubt at all.

Yep think your right only instructor quals and they don't accept other training , has to be RYA. As for contacting them, three attempts , three emails, three chase ups on phone. Hence considering dumping them which will see one of my tickets go

aha - found it. this is the excerpt that a nice young lady from the RYA e mailed me when I asked the question last year. It was a subject broached during an inspection and I wanted to ensure the current situation was as I thought...
All Instructors – Dinghy, Powerboat, Personal Watercraft, Inland Waterways and Windsurfing only have to be a member at the time they obtain their qualification or at the point of revalidation.
· All Examiners, Trainers and Coach Assessors are required to be a member for the entire time they intend to hold and actively use their qualifications.
I had no trouble getting the answer just phoned and asked for "training" and an e mail was sent confirming the info as I requested
Keep in mind this info is a year old and may have changed

Cool
Thanks for that confirmation Dave. Ribochet had me worried I might have to give up instructing

Cheers for updates. As an individual I have had enough of chasing them for answers on two areas. Their lack of response even after chasing means I won't renew. Luckily although being an instructor that area is not my key business .They were also useless on support when I needed it against one of their training centres up north which opened and used my trademark.
These guys are on my doorstep and are a massive association with loads of staff in some three office buildings close to my marina

Agree with you on that Ian. I didn't revalidate my pbi ticket last year & am no longer a paid up member of the RYA. So as a result unable to teach within the RYA, ho-hum. Still doing BSAC boat instructing though!

I filed a complaint to them over two issues and the last lines stated I was now considering not renewing my membership.
Complaints officer replied- thank you for bringing this to our attention - actions unacceptable and training needed to address areas I raised.
BUT
Not even an attempt to continue to keep me as a long term member (30plus years) or as an instructor.
That unfortunately tells me the state of the association and is a pitiful response with no wider view of ensuring members remain and instructors stay up to date.
I do hope they monitor and read these forums
Decision made on my behalf

Apparently they have over 102,000 members so suspect nobody is worrying about loosing you! I'm not necessarily a big RYA fan (I'm not a member) but if they are managing to squeeze £40 from 102k folk each year they must be doing something right? Surely?
