A wolf is born....Gallery

John, just to let you know that I submitted a post a few Min's ago to BogMonsters thread "A Wolf is Born" which didn't get published at the end of the thread. So something funny is going on.

It did (unless you posted twice). I think you may have uncovered the Willk phenomenon though, a problem he was reporting (by PM) where a post at the end of a page doesn't appear to the poster for some reason. A quick fix that will make it less likely (but not eliminate it) is to increase your posts per page value in "User CP", so you get less pages and therefore are less likely to fall off the bottom!

No, HT's post isn't on my screen either, although it's shown as on the thread in the menu.

OK - here is some info that might(?) help JK in debugging.

With my posts per page set to 30 (my usual) - post 41 (hightowers post) appeared correctly

John, Willk had a similar problem with this thread http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=37219 a couple of weeks ago (3rd Aug) so it doesn't look like it is anything specific to the gallery, or anything thats changed in the last few days.

Yes, this is the willk phenomenon*. It occurs when a post would be first on a new page but doesn't appear. The new page is not shown as existing. However, when you attempt to "quote" the penultimate post, the invisible post can be seen in the list of previous posts below the input box. I'm not seeing HTs post, it would be #41 and top of my third page, no third page though!

* Thanks a bunch Polwart - and there was me thinking that the W-P was when a seemingly sensible thread dissolves into meaningless drivel and squabbling....

that's hardly unique to you!

JK - some more info - I've gone trawling for threads where this should be a problem... and several threads with 21 posts display fine (with 20 post setting) - I note that in the listings for the gallery the problematic thread only has "39 replies" yet it has 41 posts (so should be 40 replies)...

I only saw this after sending an email to John earlier querying the discrepancy between the index page and the thread. The missing post has appeared now there are some other replies

I am a moderator on LR4x4.com and sometimes I think there have been problems that our tech admins have had to resolve by rebuilding the database index for the forum, as it seems to get tired n' emotional from time to time and starts throwing up errors and doing odd things. Having said that we use different forum software (Invision) so this one may not suffer the same problems.

I'm glad it's sorted itself out now, and highlights a possible problem for JK.

It also happened on the 'Marine Binoculars' thread on the 5th Aug, and I reported it to John via PM. That thread was fine later so I assumed John had given the database a stern talking-to

The matter "resolves" itself when a new post is made. Trouble is, the hidden post can be kinda "orphaned" as no-one saw it.

I suspect that Lord Vetenari will do a touch more than just give the database "a stern talking to"

OK, I've had a polite word with hamsters that power the database and asked them to scamper a bit faster.

Let me know if that has done the trick, or if I need a more frank and open exchange with them.
