One idea could be to select only a stock avatar, that’s if someone could be found to compile a set of images to represent all the different makes of RIBS (or whatever).
Those that do not wish to see images do not need to. Display of Signatures, Images and Avatars can all be selected in the CP.

I think it would be worth considering reverting the forum back to the standard vBulletin look, with its custom avatars etc.
Its hard to beat and looks good.

Oh come on, please can we have avatars.

PS. can we have an English spell checker.

I've been a member on many Vbulletin forums over the years and have seen this question come up time and again. Those against them always whine and moan about them and those for them feel deprived if they can't have them.
I really don't see what the problem is. This forum is running the latest version of Vbulletin so all options are available.
A few facts:
Avatars are not compulsory even if they are allowed.
Everyone has the option to switch off viewing of avatars, signatures and images if they so chose and that can be set to the default for all accounts unless you request to view them via your optoins panel.
Animated gifs can be barred from being uploaded.
So this means it is a win win situation switching avatars on because those that want them get them and those that don't want them don't get them.
In view of that there can only be one reason for them being switched on or off and that is the whim of the forum owner and whether he wants the agro of doing the minor admin of setting it up. Its as simple as that.
