Because you weren't quick enough!
Messages can be edited for a period of one hour after they are posted, after which time they are preserved for posterity. It stops people going back and re-writing history or just deleting their messages, which can make whole threads meaningless.
If anyone feels they really need to edit a post after the inital period, then PM me and I'll most likely sort it out for you.
