I've been trying to work out what might be causing this, but I can't find any other reports of this happening elsewhere.
Anyone else having this problem, or is it just Nos and Grumpy? Are you both using ZA? Which version? I use it too, but can't reproduce what you are reporting . . .
I'll keep at it. In the meantime if anyone has any bright ideas please let me know!
John

I've got the current version of the free ZA if it's any help?

So have I, but I can't reproduce the problem here.
It doesn't appear to be a widespread problem either here, or on other vBulletin forums. I can't find any other reports of it happening, and I've had no useful response from their support forums.
The official line direct from vBullein support is this:
"That would appear to be a problem with their firewall. There is nothing you can do from the vB side to things to bypass their firewall. They will need to fix this on their end."
Not particularly helpful I'm afraid.
What browser are you using?
John

I've looked into this, and there simply isn't an easy way I'm afraid.
It's something that I'll keep in mind though for the future.

OK, so it was falsely identifying the attachments as adverts and blocking them. At least we got there in the end!
What version of Zone Alarm are you using?
Nos, does your version have these options? Are you running another advert blocker that might be the culprit?
John

I'm running ZA basic firewall and Prevx home. Mine doesn't have the options.

AHA! Problem solved!
I installed a trial version of ZA and turned the adware protection off-then uninstalled it and reinstalled the free one
Cheers John!

JK, I've had a problem with the site timing out a few times.
I started reading the thread about the lads who died after stealing a boat. It took a while. When I returned to the forums and clicked 'New Posts' only a couple of new posts showed although there were many I hadn't read. I seems as though the program presumes I'm off site while reading a post. I've had a similar thing happen when replying to a post. If I start a reply but need to deal with something else and complete the reply a wee while later. The reply posts ok but then I have the same response to clicking 'New Posts'.
Not major, I know.
Ta.

Hmmm.
Do you not get the "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts" message in the new posts list?
If you go to the individual forum sections do the read/unread threads show correctly?

Sorry JK, I wasn't clear on that. Yes but above the line I only get threads which have arrived while I'm reading or posting and below the line are all the other threads, some of which I haven't read, in the same way as I would get had I logged off and then returned. It only happens if the read or new posting is long, otherwise it's fine.

Dunno, I'll check next time it occurs.

Had a similar thought to JW.
But decided it was just that the time 'idling' online had been reduced i.e. time spent reading etc./ or writing without the site refreshing meant an auto-log out.
Just seems quicker than before.

JW
What you describe is correct. If you are inactive for more than 15 minutes then your session will be timed out and your next action will be treated as a return visit.
I can change the time out setting, but I think that it most instances it's about right as it is. I'm open to persuasion if there's a demand for something different though!

Yep but it must be treating reply writing as inactivity and I was puzzled by the post being accepted on clicking 'Submit Reply' but the system immediately after thinking I had been logged out. Thanks anyway.

That's because it's happening locally on your PC and the server doesn't know anything about it

I'm guessing that you have the "Remember me" option selected so you're logged back in automatically. If you hadn't, then I would expect it to ask you to log in before it accepted your post.
