The Not Important Part of my post
It might look like that but I doubt if that's the case. Trolling is an issue on every forum everywhere. They get handled differently depending on forum culture. Some mods tolerate no dissent and ban users for all sorts of things - pretty much any of the big posters here would be banned. I would have been banned in a month and NEVER been made a Mod. RIBnet leans the other way entirely, allowing remarkable freedom to post. It "works" because the vast majority of posters respect this. It "fails" with trolls because the majority of their posts are within the normal range of acceptability.
The Takeaway
Trolls troll because they crave the response they get. If no-one reacts to them, their posts are just stupid graffiti on the internet. There is a lot of material written about WHY people troll - low self esteem, bullied at school, sexually repressed/suppressed, etc, etc. They're fully aware that they are held in low regard and are happy to be repeatedly banned. Trolls are like an insect bite - scratch them and the problem gets worse, exercise restraint and the problem will die away. So if it feel that the trolls are being protected, it's likely just that manners are being enforced generally.
A Cautionary Note
About that Poll/Vote - RIBnet is a democracy overseen by John Kennett and well explained by Sir Terry:
Ankh-Morpork had dallied with many forms of government and had ended up with that form of democracy known as One Man, One Vote.
The Patrician was the Man; he had the Vote.

Maybe in future, rather than engage with him. Just quote his post with a link to this thread. It will make anyone who’s not familiar with him, aware of his M.O. You effectively get to call him out, without actually engaging or encouraging him.

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe give it try but I think it needs to be 2 or 3 members linking it to this post.

FTFY.
That said, I can't quite see how calling a troll a troll by way of a link could be deemed problematic...?
I'll probably get a warning now!

You are a Rock, Nasher. Apparently 9 outta 10 cats can't.
I think of it as stopping to remonstrate with some tramp who is urinating in a shop doorway, first tapping him sharply on the shoulder... Who ends up with a wet leg? IMHO, better to walk on and leave him in his spreading puddle

But then your local town then ends up stinking and people stop visiting.

I've actually experienced this actual scenario Wilk but dealt with it slightly differently. Many moons ago I had a shop opposite a Chinese takeaway . Certain patrons occasionally whilst waiting felt the need to relieve themselves in my doorway whilst waiting for their order. I lived above the shop and when I saw said patrons used to open the shop door and push them against the wall they were lubricating....Worked a treat on the blokes , the females tended to be more of a lottery...

How to ignore a user

Disagreeing with someone is fine. Telling them you disagree is also fine, particularly if you can present a good argument for your case. It's positively encouraged in fact.
Being abusive isn't fine though.
Some people are annoying. If that was a banning offence we'd have way fewer members here. Sometimes people will give advice that not everyone agrees with. That's not a banning offence either, and a discussion can be had.
It's easy to decide that people post in a certain way to cause trouble, but actually we have no idea what their motivation is. They may not hit the right tone for a multitude of reasons; they may be autistic or have a learning disability, they may be living with mental illness or they might just find it hard to fit in. Sometimes people aren't good at expressing themselves in writing, others may not have English as their first language. They may just see things differently.
Of course they might also be a dick and trying to bait you, in which case why give them an easy win?
The RIBnet forums have been running for well over twenty years now, generally powered by good will and a bit of tolerance. Characters have come and gone over the years, but overwhelmingly people just get on with things (and each other) with only the smallest amount of intervention from the management. I see no reason for that to change.

Thanks for giving us your thoughts on this one John.
Personally I'm enjoying the new to me 'ignore' facility which has made my Ribnet experience much more enjoyable .
Still surprised just how persistent this particular irritant is but at least I'm now unable to read his content.

Have you thought about dropping a line to the UN John? I hear the Israelis & Palestinians could do with a mediator….[emoji16]

More importantly I've just passed my Yachtmaster theory. Was it someone on here that recommended I looked at Ardent Training? Can't remember where the recomendation came from.

Well done Matt.
I think it was Pete7 who made the recommendation.
