Just Wondering

Why (aparently) there are so few Ribnet "Supporters" is it;

1... £20.00 a year too much.

2... You are a "supporter" but do not show it in your profile.

3... You own a SIB so do not feel that the forum is "really for you".

4... You feel that your contribution to the forum is passing on your "expert" (or not as in my case) knowledge, and that "should be enough".

5... You just use the forum now and again for a bit of info and do not feel part of it.

6... Three gallons (ish) of fuel is "more important"

7... You are/do/feel ?????????

Its "got nowt to do with me" but Like it says in the title i was "Just Wondering"

Yeh good one ,

I must admit it took me a few weeks or so to notice that some had "Supporter" and others "Member" in their profile.

Just to be clear I am not "taking the piss"

Yep, add me to reason 9 too.

I assumed the forum was funded through advertising and trade membership. Perhaps a regular 'Member' visitor such as myself should have a 'pop-up' after every few visits to make the 'Supporter' option more prominent and make the sign-up/payment process idiot-proof and simple?

Off now to try and find out how to upgrade my membership....

Supporter £20, valid for 12 months
- Identifies you as a RIBnet supporter
- Increases your PM mailbox limit to 500
- Allows you to add a custom picture to your profile
- Allows you to use an oversized custom avatar (120 x 120 pixels)

You can sign up on this page or click on the Paid Subscriptions link on your User Control Panel

Payment is currently accepted by PayPal .

Thank you!

It's a relatively painless process if you have a PayPal account.

All contributions are appreciated!

This has been mentioned on here before about being a RIBnet supporter.

I guess for some people its not just the twenty quid... but if you give so much a month to certain charities and also for other interests it all adds up and then 20 quid tends to take a back seat.

Plus don't forget the Norf South divide... we earn less money up here

Perhaps RIBnet could do a secondary supporter membership for £10 and for that just get the larger avatar option.

Just an idea.

Ha ha Kerny! It's the northern short arms deep pockets syndrome. It only took me 18 months to get round to it. My thinking was I spend £50 pm for my sky package which I don't use as I'm always on Ribnet. So actually spending £1.66 pm on Ribnet is a steal!

If you promise to post half as much, he might think it's a good deal too

* So for £20 I can still access all the free content on the site. Its a bit like being able to buy a paper copy of the telegraph or read all its content online for free. Except I can read it all online for free or pay £20 to read exactly the same content online for free.
* I can wave a flag that says I support the site but doesn't mean anything - its not some garuntee to readers that I don't talk sh*te. Not like a karma score might.
* I can let my PM box fill up for longer before having to empty it. Oooh how exciting! Since I haven't filled my 25 messages its not likely to make me subscribe. I can see prolific users of PMs may subscribe for this. (Realising this will now prompt Willk and Poly et al to PM me a load of cr*p to fill my inbox and make me think I need a bigger box!)
* Custom pic on my profile - not convincing me
* Oversized avatar! I don't bother with a real sized one. They don't usually appear on here for me and don't show in the ap.

So there has to be a return on investment for me. If the site sounded like it might wind up if there was no supporters maybe I'd think about it. But since the american's bought it I guess they think there is money to be made which i guess comes from Ads and Trade Members on the whole.

Other ROIs? Maybe if paying £20 meant my posts wouldn't be populated with ad-links that might convince me? Suspect you'd make more from my £20 than from the ad-links in my posts.

For some, it's just t'internet. The culture is that it's free and you don't pay for stuff that you create. Look at all the social network sites and papers.

Most people under 40 (hide) I assume would believe advertising and trade members would fund the site.

The old age (40+) sayings "you don't get owt for nowt" and "hard days work for a hard days pay" are exactly that, old age.

That doesn't detract from the hard work and money it takes to run the site.

I don't care about the size of the avatar, the fact someone here thinks I'm under 40 has made my £20 money well spent!

Cheers Humber
