As far as I can see the most likely scenario is from manually renewing your subscription without realising (or forgetting) that you had a recurring payment already set up.

I've had an email from PayPal saying my subscription has been cancelled too, I guess all supporters have.

No, I haven't, but ever since Lord Vetinari released his grip on our Financials, I have made a point of cancelling the automatic renewal
As far as I can tell, there is no way to make a single payment - it will renew the following year? So I pay and then cancel it again immediately.

Nope....def not John.....no manual payments have been made.... My subscription updates automatically annually as far as i know..... as per others here, mine has been cancelled......worryingly it seems to have been cancelled twice (have I been paying twice....need to check) !
Seeing as there are several of us with problems, I'm guessing you are on with investigating this so will wait and see what the outcome is.....let me know if you want copies of the emails etc.....

John, I have checked my paypal account and three sums of £20 taken and a forth was being actioned that I stopped. I have identified two of these as unauthorised to Paypal who have very quckly refunded one x £20 but the second repayment is shown as awaiting a reply from Ribnet/ Social Knowledge LLC. Could your accounts have been accessed/hacked??

I believe that is now correct. It does clearly say on the signup page that it will be renewed automatically, and I've amended the wording on the forum payment page to make things even clearer.
On the Paypal page it says:
Quote:
By clicking the 'Agree' button, you agree and consent to use PayPal for automatic payments to Social Knowledge, LLC you authorise Social Knowledge, LLC to directly debit your PayPal account accordingly. These payments will be made in accordance with the terms of the User Agreement applicable to "pre-approved payments". Payments will be made with your default payment method unless you select a preferred payment method. To make a change, log in to your account and go to My money in your Profile, then update the “Preapproved Payments” section.
|
The confirmation email says:
Quote:
Your subscription will automatically renew at the rates stated above unless you cancel prior to the end of the billing period.
If you have any questions or concerns about this subscription, please contact Social Knowledge, LLC.
|
I think it's reasonably clear, but if anyone feels that they have made a payment by mistake then send me a PM with details and I'll have a look.
Things have been slightly complicated by having two RIBnet Paypal accounts running, the original one and the current Social Knowledge account. I had hoped to simply transfer the old account with any current subscriptions over to Social Knowledge but that turned out to be practically impossible. Payments shouldn't have be going to both accounts but to make absolutely sure I cancelled the remaining recurring accounts that were set up on the old Paypal account (hence the emails). Any payments set up with Social Knowledge remain unchanged.

On the old RIBnet Paypal account you had two subscriptions set up, one created on 19 Feb 2010 and the other on 20 Feb 2011. I am not aware of any way that these can be created without you doing it! Both these have been cancelled and the payments refunded.
I'll ask Janet to check up on the other payments as I don't have access to the Social Knowledge Paypal account.

Did you have any connection problems when you were signing up as a Supporter?
I have records of you setting up Supporter subscriptions three times on 25 Feb, at 17.23, 17.25 and 17.25 then cancelling them at 17.30, 17.31 and 17.31. They all have separate Paypal transaction IDs.
Whatever the reason it's clearly a mistake and I'm sure Janet will have it sorted shortly.

Just so that I understand this, the 'cancelled' subscription message on my Paypal account is a result of you cancelling all subscriptions under the old Ribnet account. Does that mean I will now have to set up a new 'recurring' payment on the Social Knowledge account or has that been done automatically? What was the changeover date? I'm still showing as a supporter and my renewal is June.

It appears multiple submissions were processed. I have refunded them and you should only have one charge and a single active subscription (meaning it will automatically charge your account again next year). If you do not want the auto renew please cancel the subscription from inside your PayPal login.

A slight glitch when I made myself a "Suporter" to test the payment system and it temporarily wiped out my various admin priviledges!
Sorted now, and I've sent you a PM.
