The newest version is not always the most secure, versions which have been tried and tested may have fewer vulnerabilities, e.g. there were some significant issues with v 3.8.6! There's also nothing obvious that has changed how passwords are stored* by vB in more recent versions.

* Your password isn't actually stored by vB at all - only a convoluted mathematical mingling of the password - which is impossible to "reverse engineer" back to your specific password.

I've just received a similar message about my account on another forum.

As it's getting harder for spammers to register and maintain their own forum accounts I guess we might be seeing more attempts to hijack existing accounts in the future.

There are plenty of random password generator sites on line if anyone needs a hand making up a strong password.
