1.7 dti mercruiser repower

Hi everyone

I currently have a 1.7 mercruiser diesel fitted to my boat with a alpha 1 gen 2 sterndrive and engine is toast so looking to repower

Whats my best and easiest option?

Dont fancy a pod as they look ugly lol

Are they really that bad or it is just a case of poor maintenance

They aren’t renowned for their reliability. In fact I looked at a rib with a 1.7 in it about a year ago and the seller basically wanted rid of it because of the engine. He recommended swapping it out for a completely different engine. Needless to say I didn’t buy it.

Wastegates on the turbos stick shut & the engine runs on overboost usually holing no4 piston. Intercoolers corrode & leak & heat exchangers corrode and leak some had injector problems. They were last made about 15 years ago so parts will be difficult to find and expensive if you do find them. Apart from that they went well for their size & were good on diesel. unfortunately life expectancy was about the same as a disposable cigarette lighter
