I repowered last year and went for the new Mercury 150. Great engine very pleased in every way. Look it up and see for yourself. I got Cammy from Clyde outboards at Greenock to do it. Give him a call good price. Wish you luck. J

Mercury 150 ,,,,, 👍 repowered mine last August from an Optimax 175. Very quiet and amazing fuel economy. Simple engineering too

Hi Jeff,

How does the 4 stroke compare to the Optimax performance wise. In particular acceleration and getting onto the Plane?

I repowered 2 years ago and replaced a 16year old Optimax with a newer one. I tried a 150hp Yamaha 4 stroke on a demo boat and was decidedly underwhelmed, so went with what I knew.

Would be interested to hear how thew 150 mercury 4 stroke performs having such a large capacity.

What about a Suzuki Df140 - very light engine for its rated output although some say they seem down on grunt compared to other 140's

I think mine is great anyway

IMVHO, the Optimax takes some beating for pure power and take off. I moved from a 2004 150 HP Opti to a 2008 175HP on the same RIB and latterly to the Fourstroke 150. This definitely does not have the leap up on the plane and break your neck response of either, though, it does seem close to my older 150 Opti. The 150 4S has amazing 'torque' and pushes through seas with a heavy load really well. Getting on plane is more of a lift and push than bows up and over but once used to it I am very pleased. My 6m RIB runs about 1500kg with fuel plus the extra weight of 4 fat boys, 2 twin sets and 2 x15ltr single dive sets and associated kit, so quite a lump and she performs very well.
What is even better is I am getting a real 20-23% improvement in fuel economy and none of the additional expense of the liquid gold, DFI oil.Top end, with a different prop is 2-3 Nm/h lower and as such the same at least as my first Opti
What equally attracted me was the move to a much simpler engine - no air compressor, air injectors , cheap spark plugs etc ..... less (expensive bits) to go wrong. Lots of the parts - saddle bracket & gearcase in particular have been beefed up from an already solid construction, and stainless fittings/fixings abound
The Yanks refer to the 3.0 litre 150 4S as being 'strong' and allegedly its output is at the upper end of the +/- nominal HP.
I am not disappointed at all with it - and not saying so just because I have spent my hard earned cash on this lump :-)

When I changed it was from Mariner 150hp V6 smoker. I can agree with everything Jeff says with his change in technical terms but the big difference is you can have a conversation onboard!!

yeah, run a '08 Honda 150 from new, done 1000+ hrs now and still runs like new probably a bit old hat technology wise compared to some of the other suggestions, based on the 2.3ltr Honda car engine, I'd say the only thing I've been disappointed in is the service life of the standard guages, they don't seem to like life on a open rib console, but I believe the new guages are much better

Ref value of 150hp Optimax. I sold my 2001 in 2015 with a rebuilt power head and 200hrs for £2500
