150hp Optimax alternator?
Evening all,
Does anybody have an alternator for a 150hp Optimax - new or good condition used. Willing to part with significant quantities of beer tokens.
Quicksilver part no 881248T
I need one by Friday so I can use the new boat on the BIBOA trip this weekend but unfortunately none are available for at least two weeks via Barrus and Marine Power Europe.
Can't get one from the States until next week - but they do have them in stock and cheaper (even with duty and air freight) than through the proper channels. Next week is too late however.
How can this be? Why does the consessionaire for Europe, Middle East and Africa not stock alternators for a current production engine.
If I can get one from the US quicker and cheaper than Barrus / MPE what are they doing in Banbury and Belguim?
Regards

Have you thought of taking it to an alternator repair company? I know it depends on what is wrong with it, but you never know until you ask.
I have just had my 80A car alternator fitted with a new diode pack and bearings. Took all of 2 hours from delivery to collection.

Mark is right,
try and get it rewound. Its cheaper, quicker and environmentaly friendly! A mate of mine does it in Blackburn. They welcome something different to do. Forklift trucks, inboards and they did my old Johnson 140hp.
No problems with it at all. If he is near you PM me and I`ll send you the details.
Chris

Repair or replace?
Thanks all,
My dealer had tried to get it repaired by an automotive place but they looked at it (without opening it up) and said that they would not be able to get parts for it.
I have this morning taken it to someone else for a second opinion - I'll see what happens.
Mark / Chris who did you use - just in case my chap also draws a blank.
I'm in Southampton by the way.
Regards

I used:-

Repairs cost me £32.25 inc, a new alternator is £150ish.

In slow time it would be worth finding out who makes them for Mercury. Rogue Wave thought it was Hitachi and he may have a good point, do Mercury make there own starters and alternators or buy them in from another firm. My money is on them being bought in.
