Aye, but then you're the "me" of the Opti fraternity, Mr. Cabin Rib, nice 'n' easy on the stick. On the other hand there's Chris, the Martini of the Etec world, who runs at 70:1 on XD100, but then he's a maniac too.

Oil consumption seems to be closely related to how close you thrash your 2 stroke engines to the edge

I'm sure it can be all be slapped in a seperate thread by those 'in power' ?

Sounds like your current opti is a duff one. I have been told mine had a complete new wiring loom after a year or two as it just kept cutting out.

I'd get another over an etec simply due to the 'known quantity' of them and the local dealer being very good. (I've also got a 4st Yam that never goes near the Yam dealer.....so swings and roundabouts and all that.)

Gareth @ marenautic does DFi oil for about £60 for 10 litres but I've been told you can use Rock MP3 (by a Merc agent), maybe worth a look...

I see it this way.

Opti's are amazing engines and if maintained by a good, authorised mech, it should never let you down.

We have at least 30 + customers running anything from a 75 HP to a 250 and off the top of my head, I think we've only had one return with MAJOR problems. We are running a 75 HP Optimax ourselves on our RYA school rib which has done 150 + hours and had no problems at all. Next year we are getting a new rib and that will be fitted with a 90 HP Optimax.

I'm not saying go for an opti. Its hard to part one engine from another these days, in general they all offer a great package. Its all down to what you want from your engine and personal preference.

Good luck on choosing.

you've been listening to too much Barrus brainwashing - a good mechanic is surely sufficient (by definition) and his authorisation is irrelevant.

without knowing what you count as major, and without knowing the competitors "stats" its a bit arbitrary. Especially since a "minor" issue like a dodgy sensor, or wiring issue might be dead easy/cheap to fix - but can ruin a weekend's boating, and cause a whole load of hassle.

Willk - are you sure it was the engine they declared "brain dead"

It is just as likely for a similar issue to arise with any engine, be it merc, suz, yam etc.

Hence why I mentioned, it is purely personal preference which engine to buy these days.

PS:

And regarding the mech, there are plenty of cowboys out there who claim they can carry out qualified work on such engines, not only voiding warranty but sometimes causing more problems than they are solving.

Steady on Polly, that's getting worryingly close to name-calling

Well after realizing all engines seem to suffer, luck of the draw, booked it back in to the yard. Week long wait for mech to look at it, then god knows how long.

Booked two holidays off this year for two trips, both fell on setting off due to problems. One more trip booked off work for sept 6th, if not done by then, seasons nearly over for planned hols.

1. I hate being employed and wasting hol days
2. I hate it when a boat worth 20-30k under two years old never works and trashes all you plan and look forward to
3. 3cyl 90 opti are far better than the 2.5v6 IMHO

Heading home, again, can't watch any more ribs blatting around in the sun from the shore.

Here's hoping.
