2-Stroke Yamaha dying after 2 minutes!

Hi Guys,
Apologies to Ken if he replies before someone else does: frustration here. We have a wee RIB as a Rowing Club, club safety boat on loan, with a 2 Stroke 25 HP Yamaha about 1998(?). That is dying after around 2 minutes running at 17 knots.Left for a few minutes it goes off great only to repeat it. Changed fuel lines, clean carbs, jets etc running great otherwise. Any ideas please? Thanks in advance Iain

Fuel pump or its still carb issue. My 8hp Yammi behaved very similar when I first got it. It would sputter and then die after running WOT for couple of minutes. I didn't even bother cleaning the carb, just got brand new unit. It has ran flawlessly ever since...

Is it overheating? - I had an engine that did that & found the water intake was clogged with marine creatures & clag, cleaned them & it was fine - My son also had a similar problem but he'd forgotten to open the air vent on the fuel tank!

A fuel pump nor carb related issue wil give 2 full minutes of autonomy, if motor misses, let it cool, works fine to fail again and so on, seems an electrical componet heating shorting erratically, the bummer is which one ? Will need to troubleshoot each electrical components to rule out wich one is the direct culprit. Good Luck !!

Happy Boating

Sounds like a blocked, or forgotten to be opened, fuel tank vent to me.

Will agreed on that one, but won't be possible to restart the motor again for a second, third time in a row once has repetitively died without priming the fuel bulb firm...

Happy Boating

Thanks guys, After a full carb removal, strip down and through clean with new spark plugs: refitted and off it went like a new engine! As Ken advised do the simple things first! Happy ribbing when the good weather returns. Iain
