2012 Evinrude Etec 25 oil

Hi all,

I'm new to this hobby and have a question I'm hoping you guys can help clarify

When I bought my Seapro 430HD the guy was also selling a 2012 Evinrude 25 Etec is as new condition.

I need to buy some more 2 stroke oil and reading through the manual I found online says I should be using XD100 or any TC-W3 oil that meets the standards. Can I use Quicksilver Premium or similar 2 stoke oil? Also read the motor can be programmed to use XD100 exclusively. Would it come out the factory like this or something you wouldh have to request afterwards? Is there way to tell if EMM has been reprogrammed for XD100 apart from taking to dealer?

Thanks in advance

SikSib

Etec runs on xd100 out the factory unless it's been programmed for a different oil, I think the only way to tell is to get it plugged in and see what the settings are.

It's usually the other way around as a safety precaution.Tcw3 is the factory setting & the dealer programmes it to XD100 if requested by the buyer. There should be a big yellow sticker on the fuel pump & the helm if it's been set to XD100. Take a look at the oil lines under the cowl. XD100 is a pale gold colour & smells like old fish. XD50 (tcw3) is blue. Personally I would use XD100 whether it's set to use it or not. If the engine is set to tcw3, using XD100 gives you belt & braces, if it's set to XD100, job done.

From memory it had a bit of blue coloured oil still in tank so assume its XD50...I'm in the middle of a house move atm so not able to check again.
I just refered to manual again, and its also says that it would come out the factory standard and would only be reprogrammed to XD100 if requested by buyer.
So if I assume engine is on standard setting can I use any brand TCW3 based oil? XD oil is pretty expensive..cheapest I can find it is about £22 per litre (

It should be around £35-£40 for a US gallon which is about 3.8litres. But yes you can use any good quality TCW3 oil

Out of interest Dave what's the difference between the two oils viscosity?

No idea Jeff. The XD100 is a fully synthetic oil that burns cleanly with hardly any carbon or smoke, the North American /Canadians swear by it for the cold season.

I used to run TCW3 in a ficht but added Evinrude carbon guard to the fuel.
My understanding is XD50 has the carbon cleaner in the oil so there is no need for carbon guard.
I would not run straight TCW3 with out carbon guard being added to the fuel.
If it was my engine XD50 would be the minimum I would put in it.
IMHO

I would check this but I heard if running xd100 the dealer would set the engine program accordingly , as programmed it uses a tiny bit less oil as they rate the xd100 that highly. So not that expensive in the long run.

Unless buying loads and loads I would opt for the best you can put in it. I bet it's quite frugal and you won't be putting that much in it anyway.

Reading that I found the TCW3 is a standard and manufactures design thier own oil above that standard Ie Mercury , Yamaha etc lot more to it than you think.

You know it makes sense[emoji6] the amount of oil used varies in conditions & driving style. Hard acceleration & running flat out will use more than a gentle driving style. I used to run twin 115hp Etecs on a 6.4m RC, my oil bill was around £100 quid a year tops for 60-90hrs running. Mine were programmed to use XD100 though. This reduces oil use by around 30%.

ahh cheers for that Dave..that makes me feel alot better as I only have a 25hp and won't get anywhere near that many hours on it so my oil should last me a very long time

E-TEC Oil

Your E-TEC comes from the factory set for any TC-W3 certified outboard oil. A dealer or agent has to reprogram the motor to use XD-100 oil exclusively. It is much easier to have the oil programming set for TC-W3 so that any approved oil can be used if desired.

In your owners manual it says that the Evinrude XD-100 oil has to be used in temperatures near freezing or lower.

The 25-30 HP E-TEC engines use so little oil anyway it is almost a non-issue to have it programmed for only XD-100. If you want to give your motor the very best in lubrication, protection, and longevity, use XD-100 oil at the regular TC-W3 setting.
