250hp Diesel outboard
We had an interesting charter over the weekend.
One of the guys onboard, is involved in the fitting and testing of 250hp diesel outboards on RN fast boats. As all the Force's now have a single fuel policy for all their equipment (diesel), the new engine has been developed.
The pictures I was shown indicate that it it no bigger than comparable petrols and the engine is reported to be very smooth and running well.
If successful, I would suggest it might go down well in the civil side too
Steve

I've heard mention of that too. I was told that it uses a Kevlar drive belt and the lack of any lower gear case means that the leg is very streamlined. Anyone know any more?

The single fuel policies around the world's forces have brought about some interesting developments.

If you've got some spare cash you can get a "200HP jetpack" that looks like its a similar concept.

Lot of talk in that link about a "scotch yoke".
Does that come from scotch eggs?

Good thread this, some interesting innovations.
Barrus developed a 50hp outboard in 2004 for the MOD that ran on various NATO fuels:
http://www.ibinews.com/ibinews/newsd...33ibinews.html
Not sure how successful it has been or what the various grades of fuel are..
These sort of specialist products only tend to be available for military/rescue applications as they do not have to meet the same stringent emissions as products that are available for general sale.

I guess there may be an official secrets act thing mixed into the contract for that job!
Theory of making it work isn't so different to the way cars these days will run on 95 or 98 octane without you taking it to the dealer to recalibrate.
With fuel injection you just need to write as robust algorithm for your engine management box that will slowly advance the spark until it detects knock (but do that in real time) - and alter the injection moment to account for the differnet burn speeds of the fuel by using the exhaust sensors.
Simples!
I once ran an 2- stroke Merc 15 on diesel - having been handed the wrong portable tank mid event one Saturday. (Thankfully the displacement tub didn't need refuelld as early as I did!)
It was a challenge to start, but once going it did a good impersonation of a 2Hp (and smoked like a lum) - but it ran!

Pretty much it, but a bit more than that. One big problem is you can't get a exhaust probe that works in water so you cannot get the probe to change any calibrations.
On an outboard the exhaust is under water so that is a problem. There are also quite a few mechanical changes to the engine such as compression ratio changes and extra oil needed to stop the piston rings getting jacked out with carbon deposits. It's really not easy to do! Also the engine ideally still needs to meet emission legislation which on the optimax based engine involves changing the air injection timing as well as fuel injection. We also run with different direct injectors that have more control and a different spray pattern. It's a huge minefield!!!!
