2nd hand Outboard Values

Hello,

I realise that we're now entering the season and values will increase due to the time of year. However as a newbie to this world, I've been looking around at buying a 3.8m Sib and an outboard. Since I don't really wanna fork out for a brand new engine since I aim to have 2 for different purposes, I've been looking around at 2nd hand engines all over the place and I can't seem to get a grip on what's a good value for different year engines.
I've mainly been looking at Yammys for their reliability & build quality but I think they maybe out my range cost wise. Also been looking Tohatsu's.

Ie: I've been offered from a friend of a friend a 2021 9.8hp for £1450 with only circa 10 hours on it, was serviced last may, so I'm guessing it'll need to be serviced again since it's not been run and I assume they need servicing regardless every 12 months?
Also he has a 2020 Tohatsu 20hp for £1500 & that's been recently serviced.

Any guidance would be much appreciated

TIA

Think they are high now, I remember during COVID, or shortly after you could basically name your price.

Outboard prices have always been fairly volatile, but the thing is the engines were expensive new, and because the UK doesn’t have a glut of engines compared to the US or southern Europe, then they have held their price.

Yamaha, great engines, and Tohatsu too, they a bit more agricultural compared to the Yamaha, but great after-sales network from a few dealers and parts quality are comparable in my opinion.

I know nowt about 4-strokes, but if you’re buying from a friend of a friend, then you want paperwork, and lots of it, why it’s for sale and see it run from cold. To be honest, you should be tackling some of the servicing yourself.

Is the 9.8 Tohatsu a 4 stroke?
If so, then subject to condition/hours etc. I’d be going with the Tohatsu 20 if you can manhandle it. At 43kg it’s only 6kg heavier than the 9.8, is efi as apposed to carb, and will be more fun on a 3.8m sib.

Yes it's a 4 stroke, I don't want 2 stroke engines.
I want a 9.8 for rivers with speed restrictions on & a 20hp for going to sea. Weight isn't an issue.

Two thoughts. If you are talking inland speed restricted rivers then a 4hp or 6hp will push you fine. Having said that if weight is not an issue then no need for a second smaller OB. A modern 4-stroke, particularly an efi model, will troll along for hours with no complaint.

Agree with all of the comments so far. If weight isn't an issue the 20hp EFI will cover all your needs. If it's in good condition £1500 is a good price.
