Pics would help-it depends exactly how far it's hanging off as to what to do.

redband would be 1971 or before.......

last time I dropped a redband gearbox ( 500 ) was around 1973, could be wrong but I think the drive shaft may not be stainless steel in them ( 400 ) ?? its a long time ago.. the shaft could be stucked into the crank ??. or the gear shaft may be stuck ?? or some bolts !!

if you send me a PM with your real name & postal info, ( plus the engine serial No. ) I can send you photocopies from the Merc manual on the 400 lower end drop/ impeller replacement etc.

all A4 size.........

Austin

It's not-it's a mild steel driveshaft, but IF you're lucky, it'll have what I think is a hard chromed spline. Some did, most didn't.

However, if it's actually moved an inch, it's not the driveshaft stuck-it's the gearshaft stuck and it's probably pulled on the linkage too hard, hence being stuck in gear.

Either that or it's separated and gone back together wrong... If it's about 10mm, it could well be the driveshaft stuck. It won't be bolts-it'll barely move at all if there's a bolt still in.

Read the above-I need to see what you've done, then I may be able to help. It's impossible without pics.

Stuck in gear

Is it like the 500/600/650 where if the gear change linkage disconnects it defaults to forward and is held in N/R against the spring?
