50hp Mariner - Ideas on year / manuals?

Can anyone tell me the approx. age of the this 50hp 'Clamshell' Mariner and where I might be able to get hold of a manual for it?

Also, any recomendations for where to take for a service?

One of the earlier clamshell cowling models by the looks of things? late 70's to mid 80's i would say. Probably original engine that came with that searider.

Actually mid 80s to early 90s.Tim, if you've still got the link I think the manual I sent you to will cover it.

As for where to get serviced, where are you? A rough location in your profile is quite useful.

Looks the same shape as the old Merc blueband? thought they were 70's and 80's.

Its a bit squarer than the Blue Bands and is late 80's or early nineties.

Mercury used to use the different band colours as a way of denoting different era's of engine.

Have a look at these links might be some help:-

http://www.maxrules.com/fixmap.html

http://outboardparts.com/troubleshoo...eshooting7.htm

http://www.marinemechanics.com/

http://www.outboardexchange.com/catalog.htm

http://www.boatpartstore.com/mandm.a...&cval=5&val=23

This last one will help you if you have a serial number.

http://www.marinshopen.se/ Follow the Model guide box at top right.

Its in a Scandinavian language but its navigable (Just).

Regards Nick R.

Thought the convex shape clamshell cowling was 70's and 80's (merc blueband incl) the later ones had a flat clam shell cover, same colour though.

Thanks for the info guys. I can't seem to find a serial number on the MAriner outboard. Does anyone where it is likely to be located and if will be a label or if it will be engraved into a component?

Obvious place is on a plate but this might have fallen off.

Next place to look is on a core plug. You can find this by removing the engine cowling and looking for a round plate about the size of an old 10p on the cylinder head. Should be stamped on it.

Nah, that was the ones with the all ally 3 piece wraparound cowl. They stopped making them around 1985-though they sold them for a while after as a 'classic 45'
They changed to 3cyl 50hp when they moved onto the plastic clamshell cowl in the pic at the start of the thread.
