Currently, this engine is pull start and has no charging facility. I want to convert it to electric start. After a three week saga trying to get a proper kit from Mercury in the US (which eventually turned up but was the wrong one) I want to make my own wiring loom and use some of the bits (eg start motor etc) from the kit (most parts are the same, it's just the loom that isn't).
Sorting out the starting element is the easy bit, but I'm a bit stuck on the charging side of things. At present the stator must power the ECU, but I'm presuming this produces very little power. My kit came with a different stator, which I presume will produce more juice? So, if I bung the new one in, and hook it up to a battery via a voltage regulator I will hopefully have a charging facility. (This is my theory anyway!)
The next struggle is the wiring. The stator has six wires coming from it (green, white/green, and four yellow). The regulator also has six (2 yellow, 2 red, black and grey).
Can anyone point me in the right direction when it comes to which wire does what?
Edit: the second photo shows the wiring coming from the existing stator. There are two yellow wires that are currently not in use. Taking a wild guess but do these go to the two yellows on the regulator? If this is the case, will the current stator work?
