What I am trying to get my hear around is how can a prop shaft being a few thou out cause an engine to throw a rod?
The vibration would have to transfer through the gears and up the drive shaft and onto the crank which is in its own bearings, and even if it did induce some kind of vibration I would have thought it would still struggle to cause this sort of effect?
It either got something in there, it seized, or there was a spontaneous failure of some sort .................

short of opening the engine up for inspection there is no way of knowing that a smallend, bigend or piston is on it's way out, it would be nice to know what actually caused failure once they strip it down, perhaps thats what they should do now, maybe something completely out of the ordinary that happened then maybe barrus could help

I'm with Cookee. I don't see what a few thou runout at the propshaft has to do with crankshaft/bigend/conrod failure.
I also can't see a relationship between a DDT readout and a conrod or propshaft.
We need full, correct information if this is to be judged properly.

Having been following this thread, it seems to be dragging in a lot of people unnecessarily. At the end of the day it's between Jono and Jamie and possibly the original seller. I tend to think it should be between the buyer and seller to sort out. We all know that barrus offer excellent service on border case warranty issues but is it really down to them to sort out. I think it was bad luck on Jamie's part but may be if the owner that Jono was acting for as a broker for had a conscience, then may be he would offer a good will gesture.

Yep-though if a bearing in the gearbox broke up and the gearbox suddenly jammed at high revs the shock carried through to the powerhead could break a rod.
Following that on though, then there'd be swarf in the lower unit and it'd be obvious.

Jamie - just to be clear . I dont feel anyone on here is about aportioning blame , more interested to find out if there is a mutually agreeable solution that could be used if any one of us found ourselves in the same very unfortunate postion as yourself.
Potentially it may be worth ensuring that you get the opportunity to post your view / situation and then the thread is closed to avoid any bad feeling developing between any of the parties concerned ?

but I think that was the whole point of the original posting? I agree busiess is private and shoiuld be kept off the forum but for some reason Jono G started the thread so It's fair game.
