After Market HT Leads
Hi all
Just looked at the price for Mariner HT leads and am a bit gob smacked.Has anyone any good suggestions on any good after market leads,I was looking at Naruku leads what's your views and any suggestions.

I looked at the parts manual and was getting a price of around 27 dollars which is about £18,you say £10 not to bad where was that from if you don't mind me asking.

I got a bloke on eBay to make me a set of 6 for my Mariner 135 for under £20 ! Did a nice job too but I can't find his details now, typical. I'll keep looking.

i made a set myself a few years ago with bits from the green spark plug company. making them was really easy, was hard deciding which cable to use as i never knew there were so many different types! Ignition

Pretty sure it's 8 mm correct me if im wrong,copper high performance silicone is there a galvanic reaction with copper ,not sure !

yeah that sounds about right. if you make your own then make one extra as a spare whilst you are at it.

i honestly couldnt say now, i did however check it out at the time. think it is to do with the ignition system, and radio suppression though could be wrong!

i think its sold per meter, terminals are in packs i think. making them is just a case of sliding the boot over the cable and pull through, strip insulation back exposing the core wires, fold those back over the cable and crimp the terminal onto the end, then pull the cable back through the boot so that the terminal sits nicely inside.

As far as I am aware you should not use high resistance plug leads with resistor plugs.

that would make sense as the resistors in the plugs are for radio suppression themselves. ngk plug codes with a Z in are resisted plugs eg BUZHW as opposed to BUHW which aren't. champions are maked with a Q i think

No resisters on my plugs BP8H-N-10 there was a service recall notice to change.The leads that I looked at were low re stance does that make any difference.Just noticed it's £3.90 a metre spare set of leads to dead handy.I have also noticed that the original leads have straight connectors from the coil may change to an obtruse connectors so they will contor the head better and not catch the hood when taking it off and on.Will it also make any difference when I put my digital on,Not being suppressed.

i really dont know, think i would speak to the suppliers and see if they can answer that one. good idea about changing angle at the coil, but check that you can get a boot to fit over it as i think it may be a larger diameter than a standard plug boot.

Nakuru coils worked well for me, smoother running and easier cold starting, mostly because the stock tohatsu 50 coils are crap. Very easy to fit too. Nakuru is just the brand, you could use just about anything

Hi Roflhat
I've noticed from your previous posts,Naraku are the same lay out unbolt and bolt back on.My coils have a different lay out so would need to modify HT leads and wires.When I phoned a company I was told there was only 2 types 1 or 2 pin same lay out.I have now found part no SK390.09 still Naraku totally different to the 2 I already no of, it's a bit frustrating wondering how many types there are.Can anyone confirm if there is a direcct.replacement for a merc mariner 20hp

Naruku is just a brand, picked at random which happens to work on 2 stroke outboards. I got the idea from a guy in Germany who had done all sorts to his tohatsu. Most 2 stroke bike coils would work on outboards, you just have to find one that looks like it would work.
There's probably much better ones than Naruku which are a better fit.

Make sure if you do that, that the donor bike has the same type of ignition system as the outboard (ie electronic or points) or you'll potentially have running problems as the internal resistance of the coils are different.
Worst case is if the outboard has points, you'll burn out a coil from an electronic ignition bike.

Back to the leads I went to my local auto factor with the decrept Merc leads.
5 mins & £7 later I had 3 new leads ready to plug in. .....
