Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi all,
Went down to boat today all ready for a trip out. Started up the engine. Ran for about 10 secs and stopped. Start up and same again.

It runs fine in gear and under load. But idleing seems to stop as soon as I increase revs.

For info. engine is Yamaha 150 hpdi and serviced about 4 weeks ago!

All help and suggestions gratefully received before I have to go to mechanic.

Thanks,

Tony

If it stops when you increase revs, how can it run fine under load?

Hi it could be something to do with the fuel pickup? if it is dilodgeing something whilst in gear? if not I think it will need computer diagnosis, good luck regards Mark

Does sound like a fuelling issue, as Marky says possibly a small air leak also which would be more prevalent at idle and as the rpm increases less so. Check hoses and see if there is a small crack or perishing and maybe try a decent fuel additive like seafoam which is remarkable stuff!

Out of interest has it run ok since the service at all? Maybe the mech adjusted something and it's now out of kilter?

What's the idle rpm? I've seen motors that idle sort of OK, but don't handle being put in gear. Upping the idle speed a tad helps.

If it's dying while idling, it could be a problem with the low pressure fuel pump. If pumping the priming bulb while idling helps, this is likely the problem. Could also be a semi-clogged fuel filter or fuel line.

Luck;

jky

Possibly the fuel check valve in the hand primer , I had the same Problem with one of my fuel tanks Last month , changed the primer bulb £3-4 off ebay , all sorted now.

Do you have a spin on fuel filter that was changed during the service? Make sure the gasket is seated properly & that the filter element is screwed on hand tight + a bit (1/4 turn)
