Thanks for the PM, but Wow that is old but in good nick for the age!
Someone once told me that an old outboard with really low hours is just as bad as an old outboard with really high hours! If you know what I mean
Check for parts availability and all that but my gut instinct says, don't buy it unless it is really cheap

It's ancient, seriously. They stopped making those shearpin Johnsons in the 70s.
|I'd expect seal trouble with it at least, and it's crankshaft rated so only about 18hp at the prop.

I know it's old, I'm asking if anyone knows how old.
From looking at the pictures, all the exposed rubber seems to be in very good condition and unperished, but of course, pictures only tell so much, so I'll be having a proper look at it before committing to buy it.
I dont expect everyone to like it, or agree that it's something they would have on their boat, but if it gets me out on the water, for what I consider a reasonable price, I don't see much harm in it. I'll only be using it in Belfast Lough where there is good VHF and mobile phone coverage, and I'll have an auxiliary.
I'm not sure how you can be certain on the power rating unles you're certain on the year, which you don't appear to be..... Have seen ones that look very similar and they are 1990 MOD motors.

Released from the MOD in 1990, maybe. It's like buying a Morris Marina. it might have only just been registered, but it can't be later than about 1980 as thats when they stopped manufacture.
I'm not certain of the year, however that type of shear pin prop Johnrude with that shape cowl hasn't been made since the 1970s, so it CAN'T be newer than that. I had an identical one bar the green paint-it was 1973.They were superceded in the late '70s by the through hub exhaust motors.
They were only ever crankshaft rated-prop rating didn't start til a decade after those motors went out of production.
I'm not talking about the exposed rubber either, but the crank bearing seals inside the motor. They harden with lack of use and start to leak.

If you want a copy, I've got the workshop manual here for it on PDF. I just checked it. Last manufactured 1978.

Not sure if it was you, or someone else that I spoke to and said I thought it was probobly mid 70's from what I could see, but that's my gut feeling still.
IMO, if I can get spares, and the thing doesn't rattle itself to bits when started, that's a good start....

Thing is,new spares may well be a problem.
I sold mine about 8 years ago. I couldn't buy a new prop at the time as they weren't available anymore. Getting new nuts and bolts was a task and a half as well as they're all American threads.
I bought an immaculate secondhand 1993 Mariner 50 with power trim and the remotes for my SR4 from a main dealer for the same price that he's asking for that motor. Unless you can knock him down to £300, it's not worth it.

If it's mid 70's then that's about 38 years old, I would have thought that somethings going to let go when it's used. I may be wrong but it would always be on my mind....
