Avon SR6 new steering...

Hi all, we replaced the engines on our SR6 a couple of years but kept the same steering. We've since managed to bend the main ram quite dramatically and have had various leaks. I'm wondering if it's time for a full overhaul of the steering system. Does anyone have any recommendations for this boat? It's a twin 90HP. Trying to narrow down the options.

Thanks

The Teleflex Baystar and SeaStar systems are pretty much industry standard. I think Baystar is up to 150hp and Seastar is 150hp and above.

However if the helm pump is undamaged you might be able to just put a new ram on the system but check with the manufacturer if you are going to do that to make sure they are compatible systems.

Thanks. I think that's exactly what I need to do. So - to be clear - if I need everything except the helm pump then I need the hoses, connections and ram (hopefully can use the same tie rod as the previous steering set). So this kind of thing: https://www.boatmad.com/forum/f9/sea...ses-31829.html ?

But your caution is that I'd need to check seastar hoses are compatible with the helm pump currently in place?

Thanks so much!

You also need to check the ram volume against the pump output. If the pump output is for a smaller ram & you fit a higher volume ram, you will need more turns of the wheel to get from lock to lock. Vice-versa if you fit a smaller volume ram. Ideally you’d fit like for like.
