Back up engine

Are we being over cautious considering a back up engine?

We mainly use the RIB in and around Chichester Harbour/Solent/IOW. If so what engine would you recommend as a back up?

Beats paddling if main engine goes. A 3.5 tohatsu or 4hp should be adequet for your set up

I bought a Tohatsu 3.5 last year for when we are out on our own and I have not used it once yet always been out with other ribs, but it's there if we need it

Some solent ribbers prefer to invest their money in seastart rather than six engines. This combined with the fact that the solent is rarely deserted and well served with rescue organisations means it is one area where you may have options.

We'd better not send The Black Shadow round then... all that ribbed latex might send her a bit giddy

In the US, ~$150/year gets you unlimited towing up to ~60 miles offshore!

Cracking little engines in 2 stroke guise although getting a little hard to find, especially long shaft. Tohatsu also do a 5hp 2-stroke. Remember to tension it while underway, the tilt lock isn't up to the job, and you're likely to lose it in the briny!

I will second that, you would have thought for what it would cost that they would have but a stainless steel pin in instead of ally Just another thought, not sure what make of rib you have got but check if there is enough room on the transom and if not, you will need to fit an aux bracket.
