In my experience, that rule of thumb argument about twins being the lesser of the whole doesn't always pan out.
Having said that, Yam/Tohatsu 90 everytime for a 5.4. Mid mount the tanks and a 115 V4 does the business.

Here's another thought:
Soozook DT90: not many of them around, but if you could find one, it would be a super motor on a SR5.4. It's a 60 deg V4, 1.5 litre, good on juice and bags of grunt. Basically a de-tuned DT100, produced in the mid to late '90s to replace the ageing DT85, before Soozook went all 4-stroke on us.
There again, you could go for a Twatsoo TLDi, Opti or E-tec, if you want a modern 90hp 2-stroke. The new(ish) Soozook DF90 is relatively light if you want a 4-stroke.
Now, have I left anything out?

Thanks DM, one vote for the twins then!
I wonder what insurers would say about overpowering a SR with the 115hp I know it's often done but could it be a problem?
Has anybody got true performance figures for a Yam90 5.4?

how did other factors compare? Holeshot, planing speed, time to plane, WOT etc, it's not always about top end

What boat was the CE plate fitted to originally?

Dunno. I've never owned a watch.

No, it's not and it's not always about redundancy and manouvrebility either. Twins give better low down torque but more important in a small boat, better lateral stability.

Being a welsh person, I thought you would know that the 5.4 was originally rated at 115 til some one who shall remain nameless blew the transom off one by fitting a Yam 130 V4 so the 115 was a compromise

OK exploring options here, what are a matched pair of Mariner 40 longshafts worth Elec and manual start, oil injection complete with all cables and controls. Exceptionally tidy condition, been in storage for years.

Was that the prototype model, before fibreglass was invented?

I'd say around £600 - £700 each. Would suit an SR4 nicely and there's always guys resurrecting them.
The market for selling them as a pair would be limited.

I agree, but you didn't mention that initially, you highlighted the top end performance difference
