Brand New Honda 10BF Smoking and Cuts Out!

A neighbour on my pontoon has just bought a brand new BF10 long shaft from the Honda main agent in Gateshead and had it installed by a recommended Honda trained engineer. From the start it smokes from the engine cover, cuts out, and has a poor tickover. the engineer has spent hours trying to sort it but is at a loss! New engine, petrol and cleaned fuel lines.

The main agent says it is Hondas problem and Honda says it is the agents responsibility!

Has anybody had a problem like this and what was the resolution?

We don't hear of many problems.... if any... with outboards supplied brand new. I am amazed the Honda dealer hasn't done the decent thing and refunded/replaced. It is the selling dealer not Honda who are liable to resolve but of course you can try and get Honda to pressure the dealer.

I wonder if the third party (I assume) engineer who fitted has blurred the situation if Honda or dealer are saying he is to blame?

Generally your contract lies with the person you paid the money to. The Agent in this case. I’d be firm & demand a refund. The purchaser has been reasonable in allowing the agent several attempts to rectify the issue. It’s now refund time. I can recommend a very good litigation solicitor [emoji6]

Brand new engine . Full refund or a complete new engine . Don't be fobbed off by the dealer, your contract is with him and the law is on your side.

If it smokes from the engine cover something really has gone dreadfully wrong, don't let the agent fob you off, fight tooth and nail to get it replaced

Worth a read:

"Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act are against the retailer – the company that sold you the product – not the manufacturer, so you must take any claim to the retailer."
