Broken power trim on E-Tec
Two weeks ago I put my boat in the water again for the first time this season.
Before sliding the boat from the slipway I briefly checked the ptt, wich seemed to
be working ok. However, being in the water, I noticed that the engine did not trim all
the way down, it was stuck half way in the trim position...
The trim was going up, but not down and at a certain point, was not functioning
at all anymore. When we lifted the boat back from the water again and onto the trailer,
I friend of mine immediately noticed the problem: there was a hole in the
electro/hydraulic pump. It had been wrecked by the horizontal cylinder that is
attached to the upper vertical trim cylinder of the ptt unit; the locking ring on the
right hand side of the horizontal cylinder was gone! Therefore, the horizontal
cylinder could slide to the left, where the pump is located, and when operating
the trim down and the engine's thrust, the cylinder could crash into the pump.
Obviously, since its a new boat (from august 2006, used in september and october only),
it seems to me the someone from Evinrude must have been not too awake when he installed the ptt...
