Cambridge Outboards !!!!

I have just clicked the buy it now on a Mariner 9.9 ex demo from Cambridge Outboards. I haven't payed for it yet as waiting for funds to clear in my account. I have just done a search online and found some dubious articles regarding the company.

What are your thoughts? Anyone dealt with this company? I'm about to hand over £1500 and don't want to get my pants pulled down.

Well does a leopard ever change it's spots... I don't know.

Their Ebay site Outboards12 has a 100% feedback record with just 4 neutrals and no negatives in 1000+ deals over the past 6mths so they must be doing something right.

Also they are Mariner and Tohatsu official dealers.

My only contact with them was last year when I felt confident I couldn't get scammed when arranging to trade in an outboard for a new Mariner 9.9. I was going to call over in person to do the trade inspecting the new one before paying by card.

There was a bit of horse trading with the salesman to get an agreed price to change but once confirmed I was all arranged to go over the following morning to do the deal. Then really late at night I received an email from "the boss" who said the salesman had made a mistake... they'd lose money at the agreed deal blah blah blah… and asking me for hundreds more.

I declined and won't bother with them again.

The ebay shop is cambridgeoutboards and it has pretty good feedback but I can't find any outboards on there just props and bits and bobs. They have plants of outboards for sale on eBay just none in the feedback. Perhaps I should suggest going and picking it up. It's a bit of a round trip from Hull.

I bought a Mariner 4 hp 2 stroke from Cambridge Outboards last year after seeing it on Boatsandoutboards. They shipped it up North and it was exactly as described. Fired up second pull. Excellent service for me. Only last week I bought a service kit from them for the 15 hip, again very helpful getting right parts and offfering information and advice.

I can only say the same .enquired about a carb for a 6hp mercury as an upgrade for my 5hp and they replied within mins saying not to bother as I wouldn't feel any difference and they had had them side by side and couldn't find any difference . they also gave me prompt advice about what impellor kit for my outboard and pointed me in the right direction . sorry folks I can only say as I find and they have been good to me

To add to my post, when I bought my outboard, we had discussion about the parts required to have the option to use an external fuel tank (this 4hp has its own). Very helpful and certainly knew their stuff. Like @Beerbelly they have been good for me.

I’ve bought plenty of spares from them, outstanding service and quick communication. In the world of google reviews you generally only hear about the negatives not positives. I wouldn’t hesitate to hand over £10k by transfer and have an outboard delivered. If it’s not as described you’re well within your rights to send it right on back.

If both mentioned 4 strokes 5 and 6 HP motors were rebadged carbed Tohatsu versions placing both side to side won't say a thing. Both shares same 123 CC powerheads the 6 HP carb has larger fuel paths compared to the 5 HP one, which will push/plane a boat much better. If you prop right a 6HP to run towards its max 6 K wot rpm range will be able to take the max HP out of it and have more fun than as right now.

Will need to check the Service Manual tech specs as the 6 HP should run with a tad more timing advance than the 5 HP. Usually larger carbs works hand in hand with tad higher time advance setting.

Happy Boating
