Indeed. I recall you timed the sale quite well, while forums were still the rage.
But it is nice to still see rib.net fairly active. I don't like the Facebook "look at me" style social media, I still find the old forums good.

Was catching up with Jon Fuller the other day. He's mid way through building quite a nice beach buggy at the moment, been giving him a bit of a hand on the EFI setup for it.

Whether it's your main engine or an auxiliary, you put a lot of faith in an engine that it will get you from A-B safely, now that - you can't put a price on.
I am not doing this because I want a small outboard. I already have a Yamaha Malta 3.5 hp.

I am doing this because I like testing cheap things that people make to rival the normally available products. I believe that in time they get it right. I remember when motorbikes from a certain country were referred to as Jap Crap.... Look at them now.

Rather than just believe what many people say about these products (most having never experienced them) I thought I would buy one, test it and share my real experiences here.

I also have a boat on a swing mooring which I guess is about 300 yards from the shore. I can quite easily row this distance but in a tide it is quite hard. If this motor is any good it might do this job nicely. If it fails I can row. It will be light and cheap and I don't need to care about it too much.

At the end of the day many people spend this sort of money on a meal out which lasts just once. I decided to buy to test and inform.

Rather than be interested in this and simply accepting that it is my money and can spend it as I wish many chose to jump on me and give me a kicking.

There are however some on here who will find this useful information so I will continue. If of course the engine arrives in the post.

Well if that came from Switzerland I am amazed as it arrived today. Seems that no other costs to pay.

Here it is in its box.

First look at that it looks at least better than the strimmer motor on a stick!

Put some oil in the engine with the supplied funnel. Put in some 4 stroke petrol. Primed it and away it went. I think it is quieter than I had expected. It is very easy to start.

The prop seems to be on some sort of centrifugal clutch as at tickover it does not spin but as you throttle it away it goes.

Very easy to start (at the moment) time will tell as you can see in the video

Quite impressed at the moment on first impressions

I have not got the engine on backwards you can rotate it through 360 degrees and the little through about 180 degrees. Might just serve the purpose I had in mind.

Would I thrust it as a main motor. Perhaps on a small lake or river on the proper sea. I doubt it at the moment.

Would it be noisy in proper use..... Yes a bit but not too bad I think.

Interesting to see it on the water at some point

Where I was running it in the video it is as you can see quite close to a building so the sound is somewhat amplified. I suspect with the leg in the water some of the other 'noise' from it might be lessened a bit. We will see. How long you could poke up with it at WOT I dont know

I don't think that was too loud, I suspect as you did, out on the water it will be same as any other.

As for looks, it's at least better looking than the old Seagull clonkers.

Here are a few pictures of it fitted to a boat...

On thing is they have got the H and L. I presume High and Low the wrong way round on the throttle. I remember reading this somewhere before on another Chinese made engine

I have got an old seagull and I would agree with you

I've just realised, that engine looked so familiar because it's the identical one to my lawnmower engine. Good starter, runs well on mower. Beware the cheap nasty foam air filter collapsing. A mesh was fitted to later engines to stop it being ingested.

I will have a look at the mesh thing

Looked at the air filter. Can see a reasonable filter insert.

Once warm it starts very well with half a pull. There is a bit of a knack at starting it with the choke and the primer bulb.

Here is another pic of it running on a proper stand.

I have emailed the seller because despite it being marked on the bottom at the gearbox saying oil. there does not seem to be any way of putting oil in that part of it. I think this might be a hang over of what the casting might have originally been for. It also has a dummy exhaust outlet part way down the shaft which is a little odd.

I suspect I need to run it in a little some how.

I also suspect I need to lay it down so the carb is uppermost when transporting. But it doesn't seem to say much about that in the instructions !. Don't you just love these Chinese instructions

Top marks for getting tour wife interested in this venture. My wife won't even set foot in my boat!

So far so good, it runs. That open cowl design and sea water will take it's toll in the elements, but interested to see the next video on a inflatable and 'open it up' as they say. Take your oars too!

Here is a guy using the exact same motor on a quite large Jon boat. Once he puts it on the back. At the end of the video it pushes the boat quite well for a large boat

I will certainly have my Oars. And yes I suspect this will not stand the test of time re corrosion. But I have already had a bit of fun with it. and I think we have to give these things a try if they are not too expensive.

I also took delivery of a front wheel electric conversion kit today to convert my wife's bike to electric. I have already done mine and it works well
