Clamshell poppet valve?

I'm reassembling the lump, and I have found a rather bizarre thing - my poppet valve doesn't have anything to seat against.

So, I go & look at the parts listings to see what is missing, and discover that on the 3 cyl 60s there doesn't appear to be one at all, (likewise no thermostat) but they show up on the 650. (implying my engine is definetly not the age that the casing would imply.....)

So, the question:

Was that valve deleted for newer versions of the clamshell? If not, (and this is probably one for Uncle Al or Outboardtech) was the spring rate (strength) changed to prevent failures?

....and if it was deleted (as implied by the microfiches), can I just not install either & let the water flow free?

Al, thanks.

Implication of this is I have a far older powerhead than engine cover!

Having looked through parts lists, I notice there may be 2 springs in the mix. It is the spring that now concerns me, in case it had been altered to be softer or harder. I don't want to cook my engine for the sake of a spring, and so will just replace it

Don't suppose I could be really cheeky & ask what the part number of the newest spring is?
