Convert remote to push button ignition (Help Please)

Hi,

I am currently installing an old Mercury blue band 50hp to my fishing boat, I got hold of some old remotes but same old story they have a ignition barrel but no key...

I want to rig up the remotes with a push button ignition but my knowledge of electrics is limited. I have proved all the connections and drawn this diagram:

http://www.pluspc.co.uk/Outboard_Circuit.JPG

Again I am not an electrician so its not a standard format but I think its good enough to show how the current remotes are set up.

Any help changing this to push button would be greatly apreciated, I have another drawing here

http://www.pluspc.co.uk/Remotes_fill_in.JPG

Just showing the components I want to use, if anyone with the know how can just fill in the lines using MS Paint or somthing I would be more than grateful but any info which may help me would be appriciated.

Thanks in advance...

mine used to work with a cheap padlock key-there's very few keys for those barrels and you should be able to get one without a struggle.

If you are going to bypass the ignition switch in the remotes you need a 2-stroke ignition switch as the engine won't stop otherwise.

If you can't get your current barrel to work then drop me a pm and I can tell you what components to wire to what on the switch.

There should be a tiny number stamped on the barrel. Phone up a Mercury dealer and they will be able to order you a new set of keys for not much money.

a mercury dealer will have a load (20 odd) keys take the remote box down there and try the all. when one fits you can buy it or get him to order you one.

as an alternative all mercury ign. keys can be bypassed with a large screwdriver - be brutle and it will work!!!

My old mercury gearbox on a "Thunderbolt 700" (I think thats what its called) worked with a screwdriver - doesn't look good if you get stopped by the harbour master though

"Honest guv, its my boat"
