Do I worry about this?
Currently on the look out for an outboard. A yamaha has popped up.
I am little concerned because the owner sent me pics of it and there is some paint flaking from the block.
I have attached some photos, tell me what you think.

No, that's ok. It'll clean and repaint there. Make sure you do though.
What you should worry about is serious discolouration round the block and cylinder head (Suggests a bad overheat) and white flaky corrosion following the edge of the head gasket or head water jacket gasket.
Rusty mismatched bolts are a big no-no as are missing ones too.

should probably avoid this one then!
*Edit* misread your post! Thought you meant the flaking on the block was from an over heat.
does this flaking suggest its been badly looked after or is it just unlucky?

Looks ok to me, you can sort that paint out for about £11, has he done the compressions and can you see it running?
Has he got a receipt for the last service or at least the parts?

Check PTT stays up and is not leaking, also check that the serial number is on the engine and check the number against the stolen boats database.
Make sure that you collect it from his home and get a receipt

No, any discolouration from overheating will be brown(ish) or browner than the normal paint. It looks ok from the pics you posted.
Nothing from the 80s/90s like that will be immaculate (paintwise) under the hood.

May just be my screen. Does the hood match the rest of the engine?

May be the light? check the letter on the bottom righthand of the serial number sticker against the yam chart, with those logos I reckon it should be about 2000+

If you post the serial number I can check yamahas dealer site for you. My initial feeling is the powerhead and leg look more early/mid 90's blue rather than the later blue grey that matches the hood. Decent photos and a serial number would confirm however.

That was what I was thinking, but looking at it closer the bottom pic of the 3 of the powerhead looks the right colour.

Paint it. It's not bad corrosion, just crap paint. Just make sure it's properly cleaned of corrosion before you paint it.

Update
Engine plate suggested it is a 1998 model.
It was serviced privately by a qualified marine engineer. Was given his phone number and facebook. The engine had readings of roughly 135 psi on each cylinder. I will bring a compression kit to confirm this.
Looking at going to see it next weekend. So wish me luck.
