E-Tec Gear Cable
Hi Folks,
I had a wee incident with my E-Tec at the weekend, after putting the RIB on a pontoon whilst I got my trailer out of the water and parked the car etc. I got back in the RIB, cast off and although the engine noise increased whilst trying to reverse, there was no movement. So, I dropped the archor and took the cowling off the E-Tec - the gear cable linkage (which is plastic) had snapped and the cable was just moving freely.
As the engine is under warranty I dropped it in to get repaired, I called up today to see how it was going and was told that although the engine has a three year warranty, the cable only has 90 days.... Great, it's about 8 months old and it's snapped already.
Has anyone else had a similar problem to this?
Regards,
F

My God,
What a fob off. Guess who wouldn't be get my business again if I was told that on an engine thats 8 months old.
I would contact
a) The place I bought it from and if thats the guy you have spoken to tell him you ain't happy, you ain't buying anything else off him and its going world wide on't Internet.
b) Contact the UK head Office. Very difficult I know in this day age as most of these places don't give out any contact details.
Hopefully the advice given by Prairie Tuber will get you sorted though.

Seems to me that control cables are not part of the motor, so probably wouldn't be covered under the motor's warranty.
Is the boat new? If so, it should be covered under the boat warranty.
If not, perhaps the cable itself is warranted? You'd probably have to check with the rigger, or go over his head and call the cable manufacturer directly.
On re-reading the original post, I'm unclear if it was the cable itself that broke, or the piece that the cable attaches to under the cowl. If the latter, that is a part of the motor, and should be covered under Evinrudes warranty.
Good luck;
jky

"the cable only has 90 days...."
If you have that in writing, then ok, but if not, I would ask them to prove it. I cant think of many things that only has 90 days warrenty??

Got it sorted now! Turns out the fitter thought it was a Teleflex cable, but it was an original BRP cable so I got it replaced under warranty. They did it at the same time as the recall for the fuel filter replacement.
Took it out at the weekend and all looks well now.
Thanks for the advice guys.
