Engine Electrical Issues (Rectifier/Regulator/Tach)
Hi All, looks for some help diagnosing a fault with my outboard please. I've found lots of info on the non-integrated regulators, but not so much on the one fitted to mine that is fitted into the water channel.
Few Details;
Engine: 1995 Evinrude Intruder 150
Charging Volts showing c. 13.4v
Symptom: Tech resting at c. 5k rpm, idle showing 6.5k rpm, then rev's off the clock when underway. (Engine is physically revving and idling fine)
The confusing bit, I put a brand new tach on the boat last year as it was again resting at about 3k and wouldn't rev properly. On fitting the new tach all was working fine. Since then i've had some wiring issues and noticed the the tach stopped working once the split charge relay was kicking in to charge the second battery. I've since re-wired the whole boat but the tach is permanently wrong now.
Have i killed another tach somehow? (Although I really cant see how, as the tach is a simple 12v +, GND and Pulse).
I've tried jumping the Tach via the grey wire direct to the yellow wire off the Stator as suggested with similar results.
Resistance readings across the reg/rect are as follows, readings below show ground from the multi-meter to the related wire first, then again with the polarity reversed (meter set to 2MOhms) (i've read of this test procedure but only seemed to relate to the simpler wired unit's but grabbed the readings anyway);-
5 Wires, (Yellow, Yellow/Grey, Red, Purple, Grey)
Red to
Grey 1.315 / No reading
Purple 1.075 / No reading
Yellow 0.445 / No reading
Yellow Grey 0.315 / No reading
Grey to
Purple 0.150 / 0.204
Yellow 0.196 / 0.221
Yellow/Grey 0.252 / 0.247
Purple to
Yellow 0.028 / 0.028
Yellow/Grey 0.096 / 0.096
Yellow to
Yellow/Grey 0.100 / 0.100
Ground/Block to
Red - 1 / -1
Grey - 0.009 / 0.009
Purple - 0.152 / 0.219
Yellow - 0.177 / 0.236
Yellow/Grey - 0.243 / 0.261
I've read that charging is still possible with a faulty reg/rect on these models due to the design, but charging may not be taking place at full output.
Going to head down and triple check the wiring tonight, but any pointers would be great.
£325 quid for a new Reg/Rect or 75 for a Merc tach. If it's just the tach that's great but then i'm confused why this one has died so quickly.
Cheers if you managed to read this far!
Tom
