Engine Size For 5.4

I am looking to power my Avon 5.4. I have been told that a Yamaha 60 HP Bigfoot4 stroke would give plenty of power with fuel economy. Any suggestions... Cheers JJ

I think a 60 is the lowest I'd fit to one for leisure use.

Hi JJ,
I was talking to a guy yesterday that has a 100 Bigfoot and he couldn't stress enough how much he liked them and how good on fuel they are (he went on so much I think he's getting close to sleeping with the thing!). His powers a catamaran fishing boat. He was Tom hanking on a Bigfoot

Nos and others on here will be able to tell you more than me but I think you have to make sure your within the rated weight for the transom.

I'll second that, you'll love it for solo use tho, when you start adding people you'll notice it, I want a 90 when the times right -

I use a Yam 60 2 Stroke, the other has an Evinrude 70 2 stroke (i'll tell you what thats like in due course) doubt theres much in it

cheers.. I will most likley run with two people and some dive kit. a 90 4 stroke exceeds transome weight. a yamaha 85 2 stroke has the power and weight but a fuel eater.. hard call on what to mount on the back..

Don't know here you're getting your info from but the Yam 4 stroke 90 is 7kg under max transom weight. MAx transom weight is 175kg.

The 85 isn't THAT bad on fuel as long as it's propped right and you don't run at WOT all the time.

When I got my boat I had an old rude 60 on the back and it was fine with 1 and maybe 2 peeps on board but any more than that and it was a bit of a dog getting out of the hole.

After upgrading to my current 2st 90 Yam (91 rebuilt) my fuel consumption has dropped a LOT as has my oil consumption. I guess having the max rated hp and driving it not at WOT very often I think it is down to your driving style.

If you only have a 60 on the back you are going to be pushing close to WOT most of the time jsut to make 20 - 22 kts.

Only my opinion based on my boat of course.

I had a old 5.4 (flooding hull). with a yam 60 2smoke for a few days. as others have said good one up. ok-ish 2 up 3 up (one was a BIG lad) it was fine for the 2 miles we went on a flat calm day, glad it was not 20 miles. on day 2 I was looking for more.



I would agree with the 80+ thinking.

Tohatsu 90HP EFI

Davybuoy runs one on his 5.4SR, gets 40odd Knots with two crew and 2 sets of diving gear, and it appears to run on fresh air as the fuel level in the tank never appears to go down.

thanks for all the info..my 1980 5.8 was a lot heaver and ran like all heck with a merc 75.. so I guess I will run a Yamaha 85 2 stroke and strap on a parachute. This is the only mid size Yamaha available down here..

looking at a Evinrude 115 which weights in at 300#s, I haul a lot of weight, usually 3-4 divers and gear with two sets of tanks. Think this would be good motor size or just stick with the standered 90. I would just change stickers or get a different hood for insurance. How would my fuel economy be between the two when loaded lightly if I kep my foot out of it?

You'd last about 10 seconds on an insurance inspection considering the HP is searchable via engine number.
