Engine Upgrade

Hi all

I have the chance to upgrade my tired 24 year old 90 yamie 2 stroke. I have looked at the options of two / four stroke but still like the lower servicing costs of the Evinrude engines. Are the newer 2 strokes as good as they say on fuel and performance?

I have a Tornado 5.8 again 24 years old but with new tubes and was thinking about fitting a 115 HO unit, any comments from any other Evinrude users about these engines or alternatives would be most grateful. Also not sure about the max weight on the transom so if anyone has any specifications for this older model that would be helpful

many thanks.

Hi
I do own an evinrude e-tech 90hp. And to be honest if you use it relatively often you will find out that the yearly cost of the oil will soon be as much expensive as the yearly maintenance recommended for a four strokes. (That said, I use the evinrude XD-100, (very expensive) mostly because is it recommended for cold weather use). Don’t take me wrong, I do love the engine but maintenance cost is not such a big factor, especially if you can do some of that maintenance yourself. One of the characteristic I do appreciate a lot is the auto-storage, if by any chance you have a nice day after you did it, the engine will start again no problem and it will take you only a couple of minutes to do it again at the end of the day.

If weight is an issue then consider the new mercury 115 4 stroke. Its 163kg compared to the current Evenrude 115 which is 177kg. I did a lot of research recrecently and looked at historic weights of engines from when my hull was made (1986). Back then some of the 120s were also around the 165kg mark also So i wasn't concerned about the mercs weight now. Smart looking engine too.

The Yamaha F115AETL is 377lbs (171kg) and is pretty much a bomb-proof trusted engine. I love mine!

I suspect these days that you will struggle to get a bad engine. Some are lighter, some more frugal but all will be pretty reliable. Look at your local dealers as after sales support and service will be just as important as the engine its self. I ruled out evenrude cos the nearest dealer is 2 hours drive. Mercury is still an hour but that's one of the nearest.
