Being still under warranty and all that.

Have you tried John Price at Quinquari in St Davids? They run a lot of those 250s and if it's a common fault, John may have the parts on the shelf.

So what's the "common" fault then?

We have a couple of new E tec 115s on our new club RIBs. Both engines are leaking exhaust gas out from the joints where the leg extension is fitted leaving black smuts around the joint. Is this normal?
One of them has started playing up with less than 30 hours on it and keeps setting its overheating alarm off and going into limp home mode. The company that service the club RIBs have had a look and replaced 2 temperature sender units, but it hasn't cured the problem. It will set the alarm off after just a few minutes idling.
Is this a known fault?

Any advice would be welcome

Who's fitting it? you can't just bung it in, it has to be set up with the software & the co-efficients programmed into the ecu. Get it wrong & it won't be just the injector that's fewked, you'll need a new powerhead. Sorry to pi55 on your parade

Hi Andy, it is injector failure due to corrosion, caused by the moisture content of the fuel, a by product of our fixation of adding ethanol to fuel. Not done in the US, so they do not see the problem! Preventive measure is to add small quantity of the two stroke oil that you are using to the fuel.

So this isn't unique to the 250 then? Are all Evinrude DI's prone to this?

Really?? I thought it was completely the opposite! On the etec forums many people seem to struggle to get ethanol free fuel, whereas in this country it is not only easy but we have our clearly labelled so it is easy to know when to go somewhere else. But I'm probably wrong..

Oddly, for a change, you're correct Ethanol is a bigger problem in the states than here. Bizarrely, "premium" fuels such as Shell VPower has a higher Ethanol content than bog standard unleaded. Ethanol increases the octane rating.

Glad you got sorted with the injector - we shipped it today and it should be there in the morning (subject to Welsh postage !)

We carry parts in stock for almost all the big block ETECs and some of the DI so if BRP dont have it we often do.

The chap you refer to is actually Rod Bower (not Palmer). He is our senior employed engineer and was BRPs own senior engineer for 30 years.

Any ETEC questions then just go to our ETEC web site RIB Stuff or just email Rod direct rod@quinquarimarine.co.uk. If its urgent then call our ribstuff number out of hours and if we can direct you to Rod we will.

BR

Welcome to RIBnet John!

Rod Bower (when he was at BRP) helped me with a problem with a DI I had purchsed from a "certain" local dealer. I think he actually made the trip to the workshop so that he could actually fit and commission the oil pump that the dealers seemingly could fit

I'm sure I said so at the time, but thanks again. Get a thumbs up Rod

Cheers John P ! Your place and Rod saved the day !

Getting it fitted at the local ETEC dealer, I'm not gonna touch a thing so should be fine

So what's the crack with the fuel ? Shall I put a dash of XD100 in it and not use Super / VPower !?

Praying it's arrived and fitted by the close of play tomorrow...

'Ethanol increases the octane rating' quote: true but - this does not mean the finished fuel is higher octane than normal. Ethanol is added to a base mogas blend component called r'bob. The spec of this r'bob is such that when the ethanol is added, the finished mogas (unleaded petrol in this case) is very close to the uk spec of 95 ron. The amount of 'boost' from ethanol is effected by water content in the base fuel or in the ethanol itself. Water pickup after blending can reduce octane.

Very few companies would make in Octane giveaway as this would be very expensive and for this reason most, if not all companies, will make tight to octane. Although a few do make some special super unleaded higher octane grades.

Due to EU bio fuel and renewable energy directives, most, if not all unleaded petrol in the UK, contains some ethanol although you may not be aware of it.

Oil companies have to meet biofuel quotas based on their sales and 5% ethanol is about the norm in petrol to meet this bio obligation. Cheers.

We had this discussion many moons ago on the Etec forum. I contacted Shell & they sent me data sheets for their bog standard unleaded & vpower. IIRC the vpower had a fixed 10% ethanol added, & the unleaded had "upto 5%". I'll try & dig out the sheets & post them. High octane fuel has buggerall advantage to any engine unless it's timed to take advantage of it, or has anti-knock sensors, which most outboards don't. The bigger Etecs are being fitted with anti-knock sensors but they have had mixed results, in any case the Etec AK sensors are for engine protection & not "tuning". Car engines can take advantage of the higher octane ratings due to the engine managment being able to vary the ignition timing. A higher octane rating doesn't necessarily mean that the fuel is more "powerful", quite the opposite. Vpower has less energy per volume than ordinary unleaded, & you pay extra for it
