Evinrude 150 V6 VRO

Hi any Evinrude experts here can help.
I am going to look at a Rib fitted with an Evinrude 150 V6 VRO.
The Cowl has been resprayed and is plain unmarked black.
Anyone help with serial numbers or other identification marks I can look
for to tell both the year, and to verify the HP of the motor?
Also if anyone has an image/pic they could attach to their reply I would appreciate it. The current owner has no information on the motor.

thanks

Hi.

I had a Johnson 150VRO on my Ocean 6.5 when I purchased it, which is exactly the same engine re-badged.

I can't remember the actual site, but I managed to find all the information I needed to sort out serial numbers etc from a US website. It bwasn't too difficult with a Google search.

I can't really let you go and see it without a warning however.
I wasn't going to leave it on the boat for long as the whole RIB was to be rebuilt, but did use it for about 6 months before it almost bankrupted me, not in parts but in fuel.
On my reasonably heavy Ocean 6.5 it gave me just over 30Knts top speed, but cruising at @25Knots it used ...... wait for it......about 3l of unleaded per mile
Some of the older hands on here will remember I nicknamed it 'The Petrolator'

Nasher.

Hey Nasher

Thanks for that...
Its actually on a Gemini 5 metre... rather than a 6.5 like yours.
Its only just - by my reckoning - within the weight limits for the Transom, by about 10 kilos !
I am seeing it on Wednesday, but the boat seems to be in good condition,
so I expect I will be parting with my cash !!
I will have to let the Searider go and the Honwave SIB to help fund the switch, but I need a more family friendly set up boat, which the Gemini is.
I also - touch wood - think its about the biggest thing I can still fit in my garage, which is slightly wider than normal and slightly longer than a normal one. Just a long haul to Cornwall to get it!
I will try to to find that serial numbers website...
thanks again
Andy

I had one, bought it new but, unlike Nasher, I loved it. No more thirsty than my next engine, which also happens to be the same as Nashers next engine. The VRO system was fine and it was a soft running, relatively quiet motor. It gave me 48mph on a heavy 6.5 Humber. I'm away cruising at the mo, actually in the caledonial canal just now, so can't post you a picture but it is pictured somewhere on Ribnet. If I remember correctly, it was a good while back to do with BogMonster's thread about sqeezing in an auxiliary motor onto his Humber Destroyer transom... I might be wrong tho. Do a few searches and you'll come across it.

Hi JW
Had a quick look at that post ..
I actually found a serial number identification page on a website
after a tip off from Nasher.
It told me exactly what I want to know.
Just hope the motor still has the plate affixed when I get to see it next week!

thanks

Cool. I've got a complete, unused lower unit for that engine which I had as a spare at the time. Been under ma bench ever since, better being used than doing nothing should you need one.
