Evinrude e tec or honda bf 90

My yamaha 2 stroke 90 is dead. so i need a new engine for my 5.8 humber destroyer
my head tell me the Honda BF90 will be a better option ,but heart says the etec 130hp
i want the power and i worry the honda will be slugish.

Any reason why you're contemplating 2 motors with such a vast differential in hp?

the honda bf 90 is a newer design than the honda 115hp but that is a option .and as for the e tec 115 hp is the same weight as the 130 hp and not much in the price.

If I were you, I'd decide what hp you want, then look around for a suitable motor.
The new (current) Soozook DF90 is a lightweight motor and very economical. 3 cylinder Optis (75-125hp) are also frugal.

In which case, don't bother with a 90hp 4 stroke as you'll be very disappointed. They don't have the low down torque of a 2 stroke.

I wouldnt contemplate the Honda 90 either, it was my last engine on a 5.7 and I found it to be supremely gutless .. my transom was rated to 135 , and I forever wished I taken that instead , if your boat gets loaded with any kit, that 90 will really struggle, nice engine though it is

When I tried messing with props, I fitted one slightly larger than the stock one, and the transformation astounded me, it totally killed the engine, which adds weight to my above point. Theres nothing wrong with 4 strokes, but you'll need one with lots more 'Go' than that one

Have a look at the ribstuff website, he seems to have some pretty cheap deals on at the moment. Ooh look you could get a 200 for £8,5k, that won't be sluggish!

May be a bit flighty on a 5.8 Destroyer

As of may 2010;

115 Optimax: £8699.00 Inc VAT

125 Optimax: £8899.00 Inc VAT

You know it makes sense. The Opti WILL have the grunt and performance your looking for.

I have Honda 90

I have a Honda 90 on my Ribcraft 5.3, gives me over 40 knots. Very quiet and economical and can only recommend. I bought it because at the time it was by far and away the lightest 90.

Also on my old boat I had a 50HP Etec which replaced an old 2 stroke Mariner 50. The Etec was not a great step forward and very very heavy for a 50hp motor.

If you are water skiing then the extra torque from a 2 stroke may be good, if using on longer trips then a 4 stroke will be more econmical.

Shop around for quotes, speak to John at Quinquari Ribs, he was doing very competitive quotes and is very knowledgeable. Other than that I've had no running issues with them at all.

Chris will be along shortly to tell you that the engine need to be high on the transom, he's a bit funny that way!!

Phew! That's good to hear. I was just beginning to think I may have made a big mistake . Storms and gales ever since I got the RIB home, so I've not had the chance to try her out with the new Honda 90. Maybe this weekend. Looking forward to seeing how it compares to the old Merc 90 4st.

The Honda 90D is completly different to the 90A much lighter and more powerfull. I would really recomend the 90D a great engine you wont be disapointed.
