Evinrude Etecs, your views please.

Can you give me your opinions of these engines please. I'm looking at 50, 60 or 70hp

New one?

50-60 is 2 cyl
75 is 3 cyl.

Depends on what to put it on.

The weight is simular as the 4 strokes in this class.

This is going to be contentious, I percieve them to be Marmite engines.

We have customers who love them with unbridled passion, we also have some that find them "glitchy" and cannot wait to replace them.

You should give Two Stroke Mick a shout - he has one from new (60 I think), a present from the missis, IIRC. I'm sure he'd give you the low down.

I have one from new (60 hp). It has only done 60 hrs since purchased. I am very happy with it. My opinions are that the 40-50-60 engine(same engine with some additional magic) is a very good engine. The larger ones seem to have some issues (powerheads). It is very good on fuel, circa 13 lt pr hr at 18 -20 kn (circa 4500 revs). It is set up on XD 100 which is expensive but you will not use a lot of it.
I have two small kids in the house thus only 60 hrs use. (no outing since april 2010)

Cheap to own, cheap to run. Forget the oil cost it's negligible. Servicing at 3 years/300 hours. Simple to work on if that's your bag, especially if you have the software. Starts first time everytime even after winter lay up. Obviously i'm biased as i've got 2 of the bu**ers.

Mine's a 150 but I love it. The only possible regret I have is whether I should have gone for twin smaller ones for more freedom in exploring far from any help.

Having dealer diagnostics in the back of beyond is a bonus, though I've not needed it in anger yet.

If I was building the boat again, I'd perhaps make a few tweaks but it'd have the same engine on the blunt end

This is a good owners site http://www.etecownersgroup.com/ though mostly based across the pond as you might guess from the colour scheme. There are horror stories on there as there are on most owners forums for just about anything but the general consensus is usually that the ones that go bang have not been rigged properly.

Etec

Just had a software upgrade on mine, I was happy before, I suppose even happier now. Previously it would rev a little too high on cold start up, all fixed now

As long as you are set to XD100 and are using it. For us...it's a little different

Very important point. Although I (being sad) really like the starting sequence of the Opti which needs a whole crank revolution before starting, the fact that the etec starts within 2 seconds of touching the key is awesome. Even after being layed up since september, she just fired straight into life without a seconds hesitation. Plus, it sounds phenomenal when on muffs

Got the 200 small block 1850 hours on her still purrs like a baby very happy serviced every 100 hours and usually get 200 hours before need to change the plugs but she is used for teaching so up and down the revs all the time .
only problems I have had is throttle cable snapped due to wear and a little slider that controls the top end revs had worked down so reduced revs.
Came on here and asked about said problem and sorted it.
Big fan of 2strokes and for me Etec is great miss the roar of the OPTI though.
but much better engine when teaching as so quiet.
Tim

I have been looking for a new engine so I visited four dealers last weekend and one allowed me to test two ribs (slightly different length); one with Evinrude E-TEC 60, and the other with Suzuki DF60.

E-TEC:
1. AMAZING throttle response, I quite like a fast response especially when I am docking, or trying to put the boat on the trailer. It helped me compared to my existing 4 stroke Yamaha.

2. a bit Noisy in my opinion, still 2 stroke!

3. Handling was better compared to Suzuki, despite the rib being even smaller.

Suzuki:
1. Could not believe it is running, SO QUIET!

2. Fuelwise, the dealer said it is better

3. S**t throttle response, almost half a second delay

4. Expensive

THEREFORE, I am going for a Mariner now!!! mainly because I have seen more mariner/mercury dealers in the area where I live than Evinrude E-Tec. This is one thing you MUST pay attention as if you use your rib locally, you don't want to travel 150miles everytime you need a part of have to rectify a problem. Again, if that dealer is not a decent dealer (or you don't get on well with him) you may even have to travel far more!

so.....

Have 2 x 150's from new and have put about 200 hours on them so far, no issues with the engines at all. The throttle response is if anything too quick with a twin set up, the only thing I would say is that the throttle levers themselves are a bit stiff.

I looked at the Etecs or Yam 4 strokes when I re-engined, at the time there was a considerable difference in physical size and weight between them.

Not been sorry I went for the Etecs.

Assuming you have the binnacle mount control, feel underneath it. There will be a little plastic clip on cover. Either use a screwdriver (and be very careful not to break the plastic) or preferably your nail and prise it open (it's only like a little battery cover type thing). Under there will be at least 3 screws, the two fat, shiny ones are the tension adjusters. Tighten to stiffen the throttle, and loosen to loosen. However make sure that if you go looser that the neutral position does not become invisible.

BRP Throttle controls are awful. I replaced mine with a Teleflex one which also had a Neutal lock. Much better.

Aren't the new ones fly by wire ?

They use to be however a couple of years back BRP brought out the new version which is excellent and really well put together.

The main issue is to make sure you are using really good cables with any set up or as Bedajim suggests go for ICON.

Oh OK I stand corrected then, my information was three years out of date, perhaps I should have mentioned that?

It's good that BRP listen to their customers and come out with a better design.

Still, the Teleflex ones shouldn't be overlooked as they used to be very good and should save you half the money on a BRP one if finances are tight.

That's the one we have. It's far from brilliant due to the absence of neutral lock but it could be a lot worse. The "ergonomic design" is nice and comfy

But ICON seems like a good idea. They won't ship MY11 >150 without it afaik.
