Fitting an outboard

Hi, I'm going to be fitting a 40hp outboard on an SR4 soon and I wanted to know if outboards are fitted directly in the centre of the transome or are they fitted just off to one side?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Alex

I don't think it's that critical on an SR4. I mounted mine centrally, but Mollers used a bit of offset on his. I never noticed any ill effects from mounting centrally-they bounce around too much for that

My old 30 was dead centre, as has any sailing school SR4 I've used.

I don't thing at that sort of horsepower it's going to make a noticable difference.

There was a table here for offset but this was for the 5.4 so may be irrelevant anyway?!

Hi, I just had a measure up and my current searider SR4 has around a 10mm offset. I'll measure my project SR4 at the weekend to see if that is the same.

Do you think its worth contacting Avon?

My 4.7 is offset but not sure how much - the console is offset a lot, always thought this was for carrying a stretcher but this is apparantly not true. Try advanced search for 'offset' in the title.

I spoke to Tony at avon today and he said for the SR4 the following offsets are recomended:

40hp - 1 1/4"
50hp - 1 1/2"

Sounds quite a lot to me?

I just spoke to Avon technical again just to confirm, they said to fit the outboard 1 1/4” to starboard as this will stop the torque reaction and prevent chine walk
