fuel lines

fuel line is next, does an optimax need a primer bulb and where should i put the filter? i could just about put the filter in the console but most seem to be in the transom well, if i need a primer bulb is it best to put it before the filter ie. tank-primer-filter-engine or after the filter, cheers, mark.

Merc do provide a primer bulb with new Optis. I fitted one to mine, but have never had to use it!
Opinion is divided on the bulb position, relative to the filter. Some prefer having the bulb before the filter, which effectively pushes the fuel into the filter. This makes sense, as there is no impediment/restriction between the fuel tank and the bulb, BUT, the instructions which came with my Racor filter said to put the bulb after the filter unit.
Filter is safe, but more vulnerable, positioned on the transom. It will last longer inside the console though. Keep it separate from your battery.

I used Racor filter units with built in priming function (button on top) from ASAP Supplies. Just had a quick look but couldn't find it. If you're interested I could dig out a receipt for the part no.

Had a problem once with the primer bulb before the filter. It is now fitted after the filter and all is fine. Both are mounted inside the console to avoid uv and corrosion damage.
