A lot of manufacturas fit the engine I have, a 120hp Mercruiser in 6.5 meter ribs.
Infact its quite its probably most suited to a 6.5m.

Just dont expect stunning performance. In the solent 6.5 with this engine they have touched 40 knots, and mine has run 43 knots, but these are absolute top speeds with a light set up and fast hull.

The volvo D3 will also go in some 6.5m's, and i believe Volkswagon have also made a small marine diesel that would be worth looking at.

I would go for a Steyr diesel. Those engines are very compact and light.

Richie

Have you got a rib and only missing the engine

I also have the Mercruiser 1.7 TDI 120 HP just like SimmonsO and can confirm that it is a very good engine . Do a search and you will find many threads dedicated to this particular motor

If I were you I'd be looking at a cummins 6BTA 260 Hp or a Yanmar 6LPA 260 Hp - that is if your rib is a bit heavy anyway. As far as I can gather the Cummins is virtually bulletproof. However if you are short on space theres a Yanmar 4LHA 240Hp or next year a VW v6 225 Hp which is even smaller still.

have had volvo kad 230 hp duo prop .great performance and reliable service spares and other parts a bit dear. am running two 240 hp yamahas with hydradrives in a 7.7 meter rib and think there great, redbay fit the 165hp in there 7.4 meter rib and it performs well . the 240 or 165 would be a good choice.

the boat i have in mind is an excaliber 6.5m,heres a better idea of the boat.like all men i need an engine thats not over the top on money, that will at least hit near the 40 knot mark and, of course reliable. (note this is not my boat).

I dont think anyone appreciates how hard it is to get one of these big, cummins, yanmars etc into a 6.5m rib.

The thing to do is ask the manufacturer what engines he will fit, it might be that he wont touch some types of engine, and could tell you for sure what engines wil actually fit in the boat.

succinct as ever WJ!

You would have awful steering problems with that much diesel power in a small rib

Advice from boat manufacturers is a good atart. Mercruisrs seem to be good lumps 120/170 HP Steyr are good engines but a bit too techy and therefore reckoned to be iffy however well worth a look and cost effective last time I looked. The you always have the yamaha 370 165 HP lump.

If you have to have a bigger engine and have got a shoehorn then go for these babies

Not to mention they weigh well over ½ ton. They'll just about sink the rear of a 6.5.

Hmm, nice lookin boat with some nasty handling tricks from a 240 Yam glad it wasn't my £30k

Richie, for my money the Merc 120 TD or the Yam 165 TD, both been around now for a while and used in lots of ribs.

Pete
