help identify/age my outboard?
I've recently bought an avon rib with this mariner 40hp 2 stroke on the back. i'm having trouble identifying the model year. i've been told everything from 1979 to 1998.
i'm sure the decals aren't original. the only other outboard i can find with the same shape cowl is an early 90's yamaha 40 (i know yam, merc & mariner share common parts or in fact entire engines) but i'm at a loss.
any help would be appreciated.

Gut feeing late 80s or 90s.
Could look up the serial number if you didn't mind posting it. I'd give you the link to do it but can't find it at the moment.... someone else might know where.

had a quick google and 6e9 seems to be a late 80s built by Yamaha and branded as mariner

Yep agree with Beerbelly. That looks a longshaft though and the serial no is for a short I assume with the S. Either my eyes are deceiving or it's been extended I guess.

I have looked on the brunswick download centre and for your serial number, it is a model year somewhere around 1992/93.
it was a short shaft modified to an R.N.L.I. spec, the black round objects in the bottom cowl are the fixing holes for the carbureter drain taps, drilled out to take the grommets that you see.Usually all R.N.L.I. spec kit fitted is removed when the OBM went back to barrus in part exchange, after it was tanktested to see what repairs if any are required, it was then serviced, and inspected.
On the bottom of the leg you can see the extension that has been fitted, which also required the drive shaft and the gear change rod being replaced. then after the gearhousing had been preasure tested ,the gear housing was re-fitted and run for an hour in the test tank, after which it was serviced (I used to service them before the hours run)gear oil changed cleaned inspected and boxed.
I did loads of them, nice OBM. I just didnt like setting them up.

Wow, thankyou for hunting out that info! I really appreciste that. It being ex rnli, will that mean its had a hard but well looked after life (at least while they had it)?
It works well, starts up fine, there is just one thing that worries me, putting it into gear/reverse it does sound a tiny bit "crunchy". Nothing massive but my paranoia antenna are on full gain at the mo. I know there is normally a little noise going into gear and once its in its perfect. Perhaps im just hearing more than is there.
Would parts for it be readily availiable considering its history and moddifications?

those obms did clunk a bit going into gear, when you put it into gear dont feal it in just put it straight into gear, you will find allmost any 639 parts are the same, but be warned there are also some that are a differant p/n.not many but enough to make you check.By the way they were known in the w/shop as 40 B.M.L. , 40Barrus Manual Long.
If it was mine my fuel mix would be 50:1 a bit smokey but good for it, I would also run it on a slightly richer idle air mixture. The M.O.D also used to run those OBMs with almost the same extras, but the M.O.D. had carrying handles fitted at the back, so if you look in the bottom tray at the back, and see either two grommets or holes it is an ex M.O.D obm.

Cheers. Thats all good to know. I feel reassured now. Lol. I did notice two rubber grommets on the starboard side of the lower cowl at aft end, would that be mod spec handle holes?
Regarding the lower leg, im still gonna change the oil anf get some new plugs any way.
Thus far im well chuffed with it. Recon ill keep it a couple of seasons so want to tart it up a bit.
Need to scrub off some waterline grime, real tenacious stuff (it was in the water for quite a while). What would people recomend as the best jollop to scrub up hypalon? I heard somewhere CIF was good but it not done much.
