Yeah, the 5.7 was built by a bloke in Detroit and another bloke in Illinois, shoved it on the end of a leg, both of whom knew what they were doing.

To my knowledge, there are no specifically built marine engines attached to outdrives. All are derived from automotive blocks. However, these marinizations, are carried out by large corporations, not blokes in sheds.

Just how pedantic do we have to be here?

As I've not owned a Mercruiser powered rig for almost 5 yrs now and the last one being on a Bravo 2 leg, I thought I'd google for an update.
