Did you try disconnecting the gear shift cables as suggested. Be very careful in testing for spark on an etec by just disconnecting the HT leads as this can lead to problems with the EMM

Any engine I've ever had the starter wouldn't engage if it was in gear, are evinrude not the same?

Durbus.

I believe you have described the problem. I think that the problem is poorly adjusted cables. By disconnecting the shift cable and moving the shift lever on the engine into neutral it will eliminate any problems with the cables.

No I think Xk59D described why the gear issue is probably a red herring. Most engines will not turn the starter if it thinks it is in gear. The op has confirmed that in gear he gets nothing, out of gear it cranks but doesn’t start which seems to suggest his engine is the same as normal and the in gear protection switch is working. Personally I’d suspect the kill cord or kill cord circuit.

My thoughts if it didnt pop with easy start is a kill cord problem, maybe a sticky kill switch or lack of spark fit a plug in a plug lead ground the metal part to a good earth and spin over you should get a spark

Correct, shift lever is red herring.

My Suzuki if you pull the kill cord out the starter doesn't have power to even attempt a start, if evinrude is the same then you can rule it out easily.

OR....Pull a plug out and see if you get spark, if you can't get a helper then halfords sell plug testers. An outboard shop could probably sort this or at least diagnose in minutes if you are not comfortable.

My money is on no spark due to faulty kill switch being likely.

Yamahas will crank but not start with the kill out not sure on evenrudes
Not always a good idea to take a plug out to test for spark if it has spark and its flooded the air ejected from the cylinder can ignite better to use a spare plug if your not sure what your doing

it is pretty spectacular if your not expecting a rather large fireball from the side of your engine
